Douglas Darrell, age 50, was raised in Chicago. Doug was the youngest child of George and Betty Darrell. He had a playful and irreverent outlook towards life. He found joy in every situation. During his life, he excelled at anything he put his mind to. He fought his cancer right up to the very end. He took his last breath on October 28, 2013 accompanied by the woman who admired, loved and goaded him for the past 29 years.
Doug enjoyed films, music, canoeing, camping, sports and just having fun. He was a funny guy who could make anybody laugh. Although a registered Republican, he has championed and supported the ideals of progressive Democrats for the past ten years.
He leaves behind his wife, Vanessa Mendoza-Darrell, of 24 years. He was a loving and devoted father to Lucas George Darrell and Jordan Mercedes Darrell who will forever be grateful for their father’s legacy.
He was a graduate of North Central College, Naperville, Illinois. Doug was the merry-hearted brother of David Darrell and Steve Darrell. Andrew, Caitlin and Fallon Darrell best know him as “crazy Uncle Doug.”
Visitation will be held at Whitehurst, Sullivan, Burns & Blair Funeral Home, on Thursday, November 7, 2013 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Catholic Church on Friday, November 8 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Clovis Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society. Doug faced his illness with great courage and strength. He never felt sorry for himself.
