Candy was born February 26, 1936, in Seattle, Washington to Launor and June Carter. She was raised in Seattle, Washington, attending University of Washington where she received her Bachelor's degree. She was very active in the Delta Delta Delta sorority, where she made cherished, lifelong friends. It was at the University that she met the love of her life, Ardell Dean Barnes. In 1958, Candy and Ardell married and began their 62 years together. The love they shared was built on mutual support, trust, forgiveness, humor, and adoration. Throughout their marriage, they laughed, loved and brought joy to their extensive social circle of friends and family. They set a beautiful example of true love, strength and commitment to their kids and grandchildren.
Candy and Ardell moved many times throughout their marriage, but in 1976, they finally settled in Fresno, CA. Candy chose to be at home with her two kids, making their upbringing and the support of Ardell’s career her number one priority. Candy often expressed that her greatest legacy was her kids and grandchildren. She never missed an activity or event and tirelessly gave herself in support of all their endeavors. From sporting events to band performances, ”Gammy”, as her grandchildren knew her, was there for all of it.
Candy was an avid reader, clock collector, and cat lover. She valued continuing education; however, she felt that a person’s worth was not just in their knowledge, but rather in their ability to love. She had a caring ear ready to listen and a hand willing to help others whenever needed. Due to her loving nature, Candy cultivated many long-term friendships. Her passion for life and culture drove her to volunteer her time to the San Joaquin River Parkway, the Fresno Philharmonic, and the Fresno Grand Opera. Candy also loved her many pets over the years and adored her sweet kitty, Girlie, in her last days.
Candy also led an extremely active lifestyle. She was an avid runner, golfer, and indoor cyclist. She was dedicated to her strenuous exercise routine and always loved the “finish”. She was committed to eating healthy and looking fit, however she loved indulging occasionally on hot fudge sundaes and other treats.
Candy was preceded in death by her husband, Ardell. She is survived by her children, son Carter Barnes and wife Stephanie, daughter Dana Rogers and husband Brian. She cherished her role as “Gammy” to her grandchildren, Sydney (John), Quincy, Tyler, Abby and Douglas. She leaves behind her loving brother Max Carter, his wife Mary, sister-in-law Myra Kokoszka and husband John. In addition, she cherished her relationships with her loving nieces and nephews and their families, as well as her close friends.
