Betty Johnson of Fresno, California, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2024 at the age of 88. She was born to Elmer and Ida Metz in Dover, Arkansas on January 17, 1936, and was the oldest of three girls. While she was still very young, a tornado struck their town of Dover and Betty’s father decided to move the family to California.
Betty attended elementary school and Junior High in the Fresno area and graduated from Roosevelt High School.
On August 15, 1952, Betty married the love of her life, Tom Johnson, at Calvary Tabernacle. God blessed Tom and Betty with two children, Steve and Kimberly.
Betty devoted most of her life to being a homemaker and to making things beautiful for her family and friends. She had many talents and hobbies, including playing the accordion, sewing, painting, gardening, and entertaining. Her coconut cream pies were legendary.
One of her favorite things to do was to travel with Tom. They shared countless adventures all around the world.
Everyone who knew Betty knew that she had a heart for God. She loved her church family and was always involved in women’s Bible studies and small groups. Through the years she volunteered for various activities and loved being a Sunday morning greeter at church with Tom. After Tom’s passing in 2014, she joined the St. Agnes Hospital prayer and visitation team that provided support and encouragement to patients.
Grammy (Betty) was blessed with five beautiful grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Her joy was spending as much time with them as possible.
Betty will be remembered as a faithful woman of God, a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend.
She was predeceased by her husband Tom Johnson and is survived by her sisters Francis Wells and Donna Pendergrass, her children Steve Johnson and his wife Karen, Kimberly Brians and her husband Jeff, her grandchildren Garrett Johnson and his wife Allie, Jonathan Johnson, Hillary Milling and her husband Grant, Emily Horn and her husband Eric, and Bethany Brians, and her great-grandchildren Jackson Milling, Asher Horn, Coen Johnson, Olivia Kate Milling, Theodore Horn, and Levi Johnson.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Peoples Church G.L. Johnson Chapel (7172 N. Cedar Avenue) on Friday, March 15th at 11 am.
