Betty Jo Dickie was born in Reisel, Texas, on April 11, 1936. She was the only child born to Vernon and Sudie Christian. She moved to Dallas at age 10 and moved to San Francisco as a junior in high school. She graduated and then attended secretarial school. Betty met David Dickie in the singles group at the Covenant Church in San Francisco. They were married in this church in June of 1958.
Betty remembered living in a four story building, with no elevator, where she had to climb stairs daily to hang diapers to dry on the freezing cold roof, even in the winter! Fortunately, they moved their family to a one story house because their family had expanded to three children under the age of four. Betty and family then made their last move to Fresno in 1964. Betty remembered it being very hot, but she liked that it was very "country-like," unlike the Bay Area.
Betty began taking basic college courses in the 1960's, which led to her graduating with her Bachelor's and then Master's Degrees from Fresno State University. Once she became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, she got a job at Oasis Senior Services and was also employed at Comprehensive Youth Services in Fresno. After that, she worked with women in the Alternative Sentencing Program at the Evangel Home, and eventually opened her own private practice as a therapist.
Two things Betty Jo would love for you to know about her is that her family meant the world to her. More than that though, her faith and relationship with Jesus was a sustaining force throughout her life. As with all of us, her life was filled with hardships and joyous times. She abided with the Lord through the highs and lows until the very end. Betty Jo followed Dave, her husband, to heaven four months after he passed. They were married 65 years.
Betty Jo is survived by her three children, Susan Dickie George (spouse Gary), David Alan Dickie (spouse Carol) and Paul Christian Dickie (spouse Claudia), their eight grandchildren, Tristan Ringhofer, Derek George, Danielle Dickie, Chris Dickie, Nathan Dickie, Jason Dickie, Matthew Dickie and Johanna Dickie, as well as 6 great-grandchildren, Ezra Ringhofer, Ezekiel Ringhofer, Spencer George, Lucas Dickie, Sutton George, and baby girl Dickie.
