Annie Bega Salsedo passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 2, 2015. She was born in San Francisco on January 27, 1921 to Luis and Antonia Bega. Luis and Antonia were immigrants from Spain. Like many others, they left Spain to work in Hawaiian sugar plantations for passage on to the United States.
Annie lived most of her 94 years in San Leandro. In 1942 she married the love of her life, John Salsedo, who preceded her in death. She proudly attended Lincoln Elementary School and graduated from San Leandro High School with the Class of 1939.
She is survived by her daughter Nancy (Jim) Meyers of Clio, CA; her brothers Louie (Gloria) Bega of San Leandro and Dan (Laureen) Bega of Fremont. She was preceded in death by her daughter Gloria Everett Collins, and her brother Joe Bega. She was the devoted grandmother of Elise (Amal) Wootton of Elk Grove, CA; Wende (Patrik) Jorgensen of Petaluma; and Susan Everett (Lance) Van Dyke of Brighton, CO. Annie was the proud great grandmother of Jeff and Julian Wootton, Bendt Jorgensen, and Sephira Rose VanDyke. Annie was affectionately known as “Aunt Tanny” to many nieces and nephews, and is survived by several God children, and cousins who remember her as loving, kind, and caring.
Annie’s parents gave her a love for family and a willingness to work hard.
Annie spent many years working at the Del Monte Cannery, Caterpillar Tractor Company, and Friden Business Machines. During WWII, while her husband John was in the US Army, she worked for the war effort.
Annie’s family was the center of her life. She always knew where everybody was and who needed help. She made sure that her daughters and grand-daughters learned to value family too. She was known for her caring personality, warm smile, and welcoming home to friends and relatives alike. Annie made friends easily and treated everyone with genuine respect.
Annie lived at the Almond Avenue Residence Club in Orangevale, CA for the past two years. Her friends and staff there treated her as a family member, and enjoyed many happy hours of companionship and entertainment. The staff lovingly cared for her until her death. Annie’s family also thanks the wonderful staff of Bristol Hospice for their devotion and kind services these past two months.
A memorial vigil service will be held on Monday, June 15 at 7:00 p.m. at the San Leandro Funeral Home (Guerrero) at 407 Estudillo Ave., San Leandro. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, June 16 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Felicitas Church at 1662 Manor Blvd., San Leandro. Burial service will follow at the Holy Sepulcher Cemetery at 1061 Harder Rd., Hayward.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations, in loving memory of Annie, to Alameda County Meals on Wheels, PO Box 14002, Oakland, CA 94614 (www.feedingseniors.org), or the charity of choice. More importantly, her family asks that you perform an act of kindness this week on her behalf.
