Thomas was a retired firefighter of 24 years in Dekalb County, Georgia, and a U.S. Army veteran who dedicated his entire life to protecting, serving, and saving the lives of others. Even in his personal life, he helped those in need – housing, feeding, and supporting those who needed family, friendship, and guidance. He never judged the circumstances of others and always gave willingly. He showed through his actions that serving others was his greater purpose, and he always gave with a selfless heart.
Not famous to the world, but famous to the family, Thomas was known for his breathtaking art, Michelin Star-worthy cooking, and his ability to remember every fact that he ever heard. He will be missed for his humor and ability to always bring a smile (and sometimes a sigh) to those around him with his famous one-liner jokes.
Thomas is preceded in death by his mother (Rita Layden), brothers (Billy and Dicky Powers), his sister (Jean Falcone), nephew (Tommy Falcone), and his son-in-law (Barry Wallis) with whom he has been joyously reunited. Thomas’s mother was his source of happiness and grace for his first 14 years, and after so long apart, he can finally feel her embrace once more.
Thomas’s life and legacy will be remembered and cherished by his surviving family: wife (Cathy Powers), daughters (Kelly Wallis and Stacy Monson), son-in-law (Ron Monson), and grandchildren (Morgan Thomas, Emma Wallis, and Jesse Monson). He will also live in the hearts of his family in Massachusetts, where he was born and raised. Brother-in-law (Champ Falcone), nephews (John and Jimmy Falcone), and niece (Rita Bullock), amongst other extended family members, will continuously recall the legacy of Thomas and keep his memory alive.
Thomas’s remaining family, while mourning his loss, are also celebrating his ascension into Heaven, where Thomas has been reunited with his true Father. According to Ecclesiastes 3:1 & 4, “For everything there is a season, and a time for every activity under the heavens…a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.” The family sees this as a time for both. While a time to weep for the loss of an amazing man, it is also a time to celebrate his healing, wholeness, and liberation from all earthly sorrows.
Thomas – a son, a brother, husband, father, and “Paw Paw” – will be significantly missed, but the print he left on this world will never be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donating to your local fire department or animal shelter.
A private celebration of life to be announced at a later date.
