She was born in Fredericksburg to the late Rosser and Bertha (Jett) Sullivan. The youngest of eleven children, Pat spent her childhood living in the Ferry Farm area and was a1952 graduate of Falmouth High School.
Beginning at an early age, Pat was an avid reader and loved to write poetry. She even had a poem published as first prize in a local competition. While in high school, she discovered a deep interest in, and affinity for, English grammar. She especially credits a teacher in her senior year who pushed her to excellence right up to the day before graduation. She also became an exceptional typist and was well-prepared to enter the workforce at age 19.
Her career spanned more than 30 years as a civil servant for the U.S. Marine Corps, and she won accolades from all who worked with her. Her first year meant a commute, by train, to the Extension School at Fort Belvoir, Va., then she took a position as the Administrative Assistant and Secretary to the Base Commander, Quantico, Va. There she honed her knowledge of military protocols and policies.
Her final position was as the Supervising Editor for the Computer Sciences School at Quantico. She and her team were responsible for all printed educational materials and correspondence for the school. During her tenure, the field of word processing was in its infancy and was in demand to replace the typewriter. Pat held the distinction of testing and assessing all new hardware and software before its introduction to other personnel.
Pat felt enormous love for her family and friends and is remembered for her fun-loving nature, kindness, and generosity. She felt blessed by all her brothers and sisters, their spouses, and their (20) children. She was a loyal and loving Mom to her own two children and to her many, many “adopted” sons and daughters.
She is predeceased by her parents; two husbands: Thomas L. Furgason and Edward “Ranny” Moore; one son: Bruce L. Furgason; five brothers: Wayne, Burrell, Claude, Harold and Eugene Sullivan; five sisters: Hazel McWhirt, Bertha May Sullivan, Helen Wolfrey, Evelyn Eustace, and Olive Simmons.
Survivors include her loving daughter: Denise Furgason; daughters-in-law: Ellen Selover and Sylvia Furgason; and grandson: Alexander Thomas Furgason. She is also survived by three generations of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 19, 2024, from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Service, 1621 Emancipation Highway, Fredericksburg, VA 22401.
