She was born on December 6, 1950 in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, to Arnaldo Areizaga and Lucrecia Ramirez. After school, she went on to be an educator and remained in the field for 50 years. She began her career helping children and families in Puerto Rico before moving to Fredericksburg, VA in 2002. She did some brief work with The Freelance Star (local newspaper) before returning to her passion and working with the children and families on the town of Culpeper as part of the Culpeper County school board’s ELL program. She spent her life helping others and always had a smile on her face, even during her battle with breast cancer. Her family meant everything to her and she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her father, Arnaldo Areizaga, her mother, Lucrecia Ramirez, her brother, Jaime Areizaga, her husband Pablo E. Maestre, and a grandson, John Paul Maestre Butler Jr.
She is survived by her son David Heffelfinger Jr, his wife Glenda, and their daughters Alicia and Naomi of Fairfax Virginia, her son John Paul Maestre Areizaga, his wife Cathy, and their children Vincent, John (JJ), and Emilia of Fredericksburg Virginia, her daughter Michelle Maestre Areizaga of Fredericksburg Virginia, her stepson, Pablo E. Maestre Rios and his wife Carmen of Jacksonville Florida, and her brother Alexis Areizaga Ramirez, his wife Yoly, and their sons Alexis Jr. and Gabriel of Rincon Georgia. Per her wishes, in lieu of flowers, please honor her memory with a donation to St. Judes Childrens Hospital.
A visitation for Luz will be held Friday, January 3, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg where funeral service will held at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
