Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Violet; sons, John, Jr. (Rebecca) and Nathan Thomas; sisters, Janice (Jan) Garretson and Kathleen (Jim) Queen; beloved grandchildren, Stella, Cayden, and Sophie; and his niece, nephews, and cousins.
John loved growing up in Fredericksburg, surrounded by family and friends, he felt Fredericksburg provided him the perfect childhood. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed roaming the woods and countryside which fostered his appreciation of the region’s great beauty and history. John was a passionate amateur genealogist, who found inspiration in the courage and fortitude of his ancestors. He was proud to be a direct descendant of the first families of Virginia, two colonial governors, and several Revolutionary soldiers.
John was employed by the Department of Navy for 30 years. At the time of his retirement, he was the Director of Configuration Management Policies and Procedures for Naval Aircraft and Aeronautical Weapon Systems. For his service and achievements, the United States Navy awarded him the Meritorious Civilian Service Award.
A funeral mass with rite of christian burial will be held at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 1009 Stafford Ave., Fredericksburg, VA 22401 on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at 10:30 AM. Interment will be held at a later date in Oak Hill Cemetery.
