James was born at St. Rita’s Hospital in Lima, Ohio, to father Martin William Daum and mother Hilda Clara (Kelley) Daum. James married Suzette (Prater) Markus on July 30th, 1988, at the Morning Glory Shelter located at the Germantown Dam, in Germantown, Ohio, embarking on a 36-year marriage, in which he embodied the virtues of loyalty and unwavering commitment to his family.
In 1962, James attended the Brunnerdale Seminary in Canton, Ohio for one year. He graduated from Saint Joseph Catholic High School, Wapakoneta in 1966 and went on to earn three college degrees. He graduated from The Ohio State University in 1976, earning a B.S. in Psychology, then graduated from Xavier University in 1978, earning a M.A. Clinical Psychology, and in 1991, graduated from the University of Cincinnati, earning his Ph.D. in Psychology.
James served in the U.S. Navy (active-duty February 1972 to August 1974). He was trained as a machinist’s mate at Naval Station Great Lakes and went on to graduate from the nuclear power school at USNTC Bainbridge. Throughout his service, he participated in the Honor Guard and sang in the choir. He was assigned to a destroyer at Charleston Naval Base, where he kept watch on Soviet submarines, until he was called upon to participate in classified missions as part of the Vietnam War effort.
James served as the on-staff police psychologist for the Cincinnati Police Department for nearly 20 years. Additionally, as the sole proprietor of Daum & Associates, James served the public safety community as a consultant and psychologist, across well over 300 municipalities (including police, fire departments and correctional facilities), conducting psychological evaluations, psychotherapy, and fitness for duty evaluations. Beyond that, James also worked as a psychologist for many organizations, including both federal and state government agencies, nursing homes throughout Ohio and he provided psychotherapy services at Galen College of Nursing, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
James was a talented singer and musician, who began performing in numerous rock and roll bands at age 14 and continued enjoying his passion well into his 70’s. His bands included The Bondsman, Glory Daze, DejaVu, Disorderly Conduct, 3 Reasons Why, among others during his musical career. James is preceded in death by his mother, Hilda Daum, and father Martin Daum. James is survived by his wife of 36 years, Suzette Daum, his children, Shannon (Daum) Napier of Germantown, Brandon Daum and his wife Heather of Jamestown, Amanda Latsko and her husband Michael of Germantown, and brother Jeffrey Daum of Wapakoneta, Ohio. James also leaves behind beloved eight grandchildren, Tyler Napier, Trevor Napier, Olivia Napier, Travis Dalton, Kaelyn Latsko, Kenzie Latsko, Gavin Daum, and Wyatt Daum.
The Daum family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Hospice of Dayton, for their outstanding service and care, given from October of last year up until his passing. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, July 27st at Anderson Celebration of Life 1357 E 2nd Street, Franklin, Ohio 45005, from 11am to 1pm. All family and friends are encouraged join our celebration and share memories.
