We sadly say goodbye to the matriarch of our family, Maria Q. Lizama. Age 90, of Colorado Springs, she passed away surrounded by family on November 2, 2022. Maria was born in Agana, Guam on October 8, 1932 to Juana and Miguel Quichocho. She graduated from George Washington High School in Guam and attended the Stout Institute in Menomonie, WI on scholarship.
Maria met Antonio (Tony) L.G. Lizama on the island. After his stint in the Korean War, they married on April 27, 1954. Together they had five children. During Tony’s military career, they were stationed in Hawaii, Illinois, New Mexico, and Colorado Springs where they decided to settle. Her career as a beautician made many lifelong friends and she continued helping her clients as they aged. Maria had a love for plants and flowers and would tend to her yard for hours. She was a creative person who enjoyed reading, ceramics, crocheting, sewing and passed this love down to her family. She enjoyed fishing trips with Dad, going to the mountains, visits with family, and rooting for her Colorado Avalanche and Green Bay Packers. She stayed current on events and was knowledgeable in trivia sometimes to the surprise of those around her. A devout Catholic, she was kind and private. Although petite, Maria had a mighty strength she drew on throughout her years having gone through the Japanese occupation of Guam during WWII, which was a life changing event.
Maria is survived by her children, Theresa (Mark) Hall of Colorado Springs, CO, Mike (Julie) Lizama of Minneapolis, MN, Cecilia (Mark) Sellers, of Colorado Springs, CO, Barbara (Mark) DeHart, of Littleton, CO, and Patty (Don) Bailey of Colorado Springs, CO. She is survived by grandchildren Harmony (Richard) Follmar, Eric (Marissa) Sellers, Martine Lizama (Eric Gale), Chris Lizama, Camille (Alfred) Wilson-Spencer, Danielle DeHart, Rachel DeHart and great grand children, Darien Littlewolf, Cale Littlewolf, Wednesday Follmar, Jason Follmar and Alex Aguayo. Maria is survived by a large extended family including siblings and their families.
She was predeceased by her husband Tony, who sadly passed on their 53rd wedding anniversary.
