Doug was born on July 27, 1952 in Stafford, KS. The first child of a farm family, Doug remained in that community as he grew up. He played football and basketball, was involved in school band and 4-H.
He received Bachelor and Master Degrees in Agricultural Economics from Kansas State University and in 1979 graduated from Washburn School of Law in Topeka, KS.
On April 5, 1980, he was married to Becky Fox in Topeka, KS.
The first four years of marriage were spent in Stafford, KS where Doug practiced law and farmed with his father. The family then relocated to Visalia, CA where Doug went to work for Dean Witter. He transitioned into a banking career there working first for Bank of America and later for Mineral King Community bank.
In Visalia, Doug was actively involved in the United Methodist Church where he was chairman of the pastor parish relations committee. He also was a Rotarian and was a Paul Harris Fellow.
Doug moved to Colorado Springs where he worked briefly for Angell Financial as a consultant to community banks in several states. In 1993, he was named president of 1st National Bank of Florence, CO. Under Doug's leadership, the banks name was changed to Rocky Mountain Bank and Trust and built a branch at the south end of Colorado Springs. Doug still held a place on the board at the time of his death and was actively involved in making decisions for running the bank. Doug was very involved with the Colorado community banking organization and the national affiliate. Through the years he made many trips to Washington DC on behalf of community banking issues.
Doug always valued education and took advantage of many opportunities he had. As the bank President, he completed the three year certificate program at SMU intermediate School of Banking. He attended many seminars around the United States improving his banking skills.
Doug was a great sports fan enjoying especially Air Force and Kansas State Football, Colorado College Hockey, and KU basketball as well as the Broncos and Rockies.
For a period of about ten years, the family sponsored Air Force Cadets which Doug really enjoyed. One of these in particular is still very connected to the family and was visiting from Texas at the time of Doug's death.
Though the family was involved with several churches in Colorado Springs, Doug's greatest involvement was with Woodmen Valley Chapel. There through a men's CEO group, he had social and service opportunities including a trip to the Dominican Republic where they participated in a clean water project. Providing clean water and micro finance to struggling populations continued to be causes close to his heart.
Having worked in the Kansas state senate during law school, he always had an avid interest in the political process. At one point, he ran for the Kansas State House, losing by 27 votes out of three counties. One of his proudest moments was when Bob Dole did a radio spot for his campaign.
Doug died on May 8, 2019 in his home after battling NASH, a liver disease, for several years.
