Wendell Knox Grandey

Wendell Knox Grandey, II, age 87, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2024, surrounded by family. Born on March 24, 1937, Wendell lived a life marked by quiet strength, humility, and a deep commitment to serving others. He was a man whose actions spoke louder than words, always placing the needs of others before his own, and his legacy is one of service, compassion, and dedication.

Wendell’s life was defined by a strong sense of duty and responsibility. As a devoted husband to Peggy, a loving father to Terri and Trent, and “Grandaddy” to many, his family was the cornerstone of his life. He poured his heart into raising his children, teaching them the values of integrity, hard work, and kindness. His gentle spirit, unwavering patience, and kindness were hallmarks of his character, and he never missed an opportunity to tell a story (wink), give advice or simply listen.

Wendell graduated Texas Christian University (TCU) with a degree in accounting. Shortly after graduation, he and Peggy married, and he left to serve honorably in the United States Air Force. After a brief active duty, he continued his service in the Air Force Reserves. He also sat for and successfully passed his Texas CPA boards. After honing his craft by working with a national firm, he decided to go into small practice. Soon after, he became the co-founding partner of what is now Stovall, Grandey and Allen, LLP. He and his various partners over the years, built the firm to be one of the most respected firms in the state of Texas.

Professionally, Wendell exemplified hard work, dedication, and leadership. During his 60 years in the field of accounting, he became a respected figure, as he volunteered almost 30 of those years with the Fort Worth Chapter of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants. He served an impressive 13 years on the Board of Directors, assisting the chapter through critical developments and decision-making processes. His colleagues and friends often described him as a man willing to teach others, someone who led by example and whose work ethic was second to none.

Beyond his career and family, Wendell's heart was in worshipping and serving our Lord. For over 50 years, he was an active member of the United Methodist Church. He served as head usher at Westcliff UMC for many years. He left his house early every Sunday morning to be the one that unlocked the church and prepared the sanctuary for the morning's services. He served on numerous church committees and volunteered wherever he was needed. Wendell taught Senior High Sunday School for many years with his beloved wife Peggy. He also brought his love of basketball to the church by serving as the Senior High basketball coach while his children were in youth and after. When Westcliff UMC merged with Central UMC to form Arborlawn UMC, he continued to serve the new church as co-head usher. Wendell made it his mission to serve his church and his community with grace and humility.

Wendell is preceded in death by his beloved wife Peggy, and his parents Dora and Wendell Grandey. He is survived by his children Terri York (Jason) and Trent Grandey (Ande); grandchildren Tyler Jenkins (Olivia), Christopher Maxwell (Erika), Mallory Grandey, Gates, Grandey and Briar Bay; niece Becky Lowe (Anthony) and nephew Scott Farrell (Elizabeth).

Though Wendell’s presence will be deeply missed, his legacy of selfless service will continue to inspire all who knew him.
