Paula was born January 29, 1947 in Paris, TX to Jack and Geraldene “Gerry” (Lamb) Mikel, and was raised in Hurst.
Connecting with people came naturally to Paula; she could make ten new friends a day and curated numerous lifelong friendships throughout her school years, career, travels and wide-ranging interests. She enjoyed extensive traveling, sailing adventures with the Fort Worth Boat Club, scuba diving, snow skiing and golf. She also was a talented writer.
Paula was a graduate of L.D. Bell High School class of ’65 where her vibrant personality, adventurous spirit, and natural leadership qualities stood out. She beamed with pride as a “Raiderette” and drill team President senior year. She helped record, highlight and commemorate student life s as co-editor of the senior yearbook. Paula also received National Honor Society recognition.
Paula went on to study journalism at the University of Texas, and worked shortly as a contributing reporter for the Ft. Worth Star Telegram. She was also a grade school teacher at St. Vincent’s school in Bedford, and then a copy writer for McKone & Co. before establishing her own communications consulting company. She eventually transitioned to full time work for her biggest client and advanced to an executive leadership position in the local chapter.
Paula’s career transitioned into Association Management as she advanced to an executive leadership position with the National Association of Women in Construction, Ft. Worth Chapter. She relocated to Northern Virginia in 1994 where she served as Executive Vice President for the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America. She then returned to Texas to serve as President of Associated Builders and Contractors North Texas Chapter in Dallas. From there, she completed the final decade of career with American Institute of Architects—first as Executive Director of the Dallas Chapter and then Managing Director, Chapter Collaboration and Resources at AIA headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Paula is survived by her daughter Kimberly Clements of Sacramento, CA; daughter and son-in-law Christie and Mick Miller of Denton, TX; mother Geraldene (Lamb) Mikel and uncle Bobby Lamb of Tool, TX; former husband Bill Clements of Fort Worth, TX, and a treasured collection of lifelong friends. She was predeceased by her father, Jack Mikel and sister Janet Mikel.
In lieu of flowers, it was Paula’s request that memorial donations be made to Lazarex Cancer Foundation.
Paula’s service will be held at First United Methodist Church of Hurst on June 1, 2019 at 2:00 pm.
