Mike Young died at home surrounded by loved ones on December 5, 2023 after a long illness. He was predeceased by his son Michael, brother Jerry, and his parents. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Margaret, their daughter Alison, and daughter in law Amanda. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Cassidy, Christian, Erin McNett, and Porcelain; great-grandchildren Juliet, Guinevere, Mila, Lucas, and Robyn. Mike’s niece Sherrie and her husband Jr., along with great niece Olivia and nephew Kobe have been precious to Mike and great caregivers.
Mike was born on December 8, 1943. His family lived in Carrolton where he grew up helping out at his dad’s grocery store and at his funeral home. Mike loved sports, especially football and basketball, and he received a full scholarship to UTA for football. From there he went to TCU’s Brite Divinity School where he received his Masters in Divinity, and then went on to earn a Doctorate in Ministry.
Mike was ordained in the United Methodist Church and served many churches in the greater Fort Worth area. He was beloved by everyone lucky enough to have him as their pastor. His career was interrupted by a failing heart, which was ironic given the immensity of Mike’s heart for others, but thanks to the grace of God and an extraordinary gift from an organ donor, he received a new heart and lived 14 more years. During that time he returned to ministry and felt that he had completed what he started.
Mike absolutely loved football and baseball, and he avidly watched as many games as he could with the Cowboys, Rangers or his favorite college teams. (Go TCU!) He was also a reader, deep thinker, and all around brilliant man. He was known for his self-deprecating wit, his warmth, and his wisdom.
Through it all, Mike’s faith never wavered. He endured health issues, the death of his son, and more. He always said that he felt God’s presence with him. He died just short of his 80th birthday, and his friends and family are grateful for every day they had with him.
