Dr. Lucien Edwin Coleman, Jr.

Dr. Lucien E. Coleman, Jr., son of Lucien and Beulah Mae Coleman, passed away on the morning of Saturday, June 11, 2022 at his home in Weatherford, TX. Born in Lepanto, AR on March 2, 1931, Dr. Coleman lived in several Arkansas towns growing up before moving to Little Rock, where Lucien, Sr. was a two-term state senator. After graduating high school in Springdale, Lucien enrolled at Ouachita Baptist College in Arkadelphia. One of the highlights of his collegiate career came in 1951, when he and his partner won a national debate championship at Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater. More importantly that year, he became engaged to Bobbie Holland from Lunsford, AR, beginning a partnership in ministry that spanned the next seven decades. In fact, they celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary eight days prior to his death.

Dr. Coleman was an accomplished scholar, earning B.A.s in English and Divinity; M.A. degrees in Divinity, Theology, Religious Education, and Communications; and a Doctorate in Religious Education. He served as pastor of several churches before committing his life to full-time teaching, for 17 years at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY and another 10 years at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX. He taught in seminaries and conference centers on six continents and was a prolific author, writing dozens of articles and several books about religious education, the most popular being How to Teach the Bible and Why the Church Must Teach. In addition, Dr. and Mrs. Coleman wrote and published Sunday School training materials out of their home for 38 years. At its peak, their teaching ministry served more than 800 churches. He was most recently working on a devotional series to publish for free on digital platforms.

Dr. Coleman is survived by his wife, Bobbie, and their three children and their spouses: Vivian Conrad (John); Lynette Johnson (Garry); and Martin Coleman (Shirley). They also have 12 grandchildren and 22 great-children (so far).

Visitation with the Coleman Family is scheduled for 2:30 PM on Saturday, June 18 at Laurel Land Funeral Home in Ft. Worth, TX. A memorial service will begin in the main chapel at 3:30, followed by interment at the Laurel Land Cemetery.
