To My Best Friend Karen,
We've had a long journey together in this life of ours through thick and thin. 
We shared our most personal feelings about life and people, nothing was off limits.
We shared many tears and many laughs.
We shared our children's births, pregnancies, and weddings.
You have been my rock, my sister and so much more.
Now when somethings happens in life, I will still be reaching for my phone to call you but now it will be through Jesus.
My Heart is broken and I will miss you everyday for the rest of my life.
I am so fortunate to have known you and had you in my life. You left this life way too early but I know you'll be up in heaven cooking your favorite dishes and teaching Dance to the little ones.
You always reminded me you were ready to go to Jesus when he called.
May you Rest in Peace my Dear Friend and someday I will see you again...

It is times like this that I am reminded to draw closer to our Father in Heaven to draw on his strength when we are weak.  He is a loving Father that does not like to see us suffer.  He sent his only son Jesus, to be born in human flesh as a vulnerable baby in a manger, to grow up in a carpentered house instead of in a position of power, to walk on earth with us and pay the ultimate price for all of our sins.  This is how much he loves us.  We might not always agree or understand but he is a good, good Father. 

Today my mother, Karen Hicks, has gone home to be with our Father in Heaven.  She is at peace and sitting at the right hand of our Heavenly Father.  As we start this new chapter in our lives I draw upon his strength during our weakness.  I pray for strength, to find comfort, and encouragement for my dad to help him get through the next minute, hour, day and months to come.  As my mother is at peace without pain, I am reminded of the loved ones that are left behind and are the only ones hurting.  My mother was a strong woman and did not want sympathy.  She would want us to celebrate her life and rejoice and be reminded that the Lord has healed her broken body.

Dear Jim & Family

Our hearts continue to be grieved with the loss of Karen!  What a great loss!!  We couldn't have asked (or prayed as we did) for better neighbors.  We didn't know of a feistier woman or one that would always "have your back" as Karen did!  She genuinely cared so much for our family and showed this love and kindness in so many practical ways.

First of all, I would like to say that I noticed a huge difference between Karen and me.  When a snake was involved, I would "SCREAM" and she would "SHOOT" I don't know many ladies as fearless as Karen.  Whether it was her and Jim coming to shoot the rattlesnake under our porch (when Henry was away) and wanting to take the rattle home for a keepsake, chasing loiters at the cul-de-sac down highway 4, or facing multiple health issues; Karen displayed an unwavering bravery that we admired.  Shortly before her homecoming, a pavement man dared to drive up on her driveway which she informed him was private property.  She told me after that incident, she put a gun in her glove compartment just in case she needed it next time.  

Karen would often check on us if our lights hadn't been on for a night or two, just making sure we were okay.  In November, Henry & I were heading back home from the airport.  We barely came upon a bad wreck on Hwy. 4 when we received a call from Jim & Karen to make sure we weren't in the wreck.  One time several years ago, an ambulance came to our house for our daughter.  As soon as the EMS showed up, Jim & Karen came up on their gator to check on us.  As we headed to the hospital, they were so selfless and willing to take our younger son home with them even though he was running a fever.  

Karen was very proud and thankful of their place in the country.  Karen loved her horses and garden.  She regularly fed the raccoons or stray cats behind their house.  I'M sure our animals would have fared better with her than with us.  Her horses were also quite spoiled.  She had a real "green thumb."  She was always sharing her tomatoes, basil, blackberry starter or giving us veggies that had been sealed for the freezer.  She loved the country and her neighbors.  

When Audrey was in 4-h, she and I were going to be in the Texas Independence Parade in Granbury.  Neither one of us really had anything western to wear.  We checked with Karen and she decked us out!  Karen was always willing to help you out no matter what.  In August of 2018, Hunter, Audrey, and I were in a wreck.  The next day, I needed to get Hunter to a Dr's appointment.  Karen dropped everything to take Hunter over 40 mins. away to Dr. visit.  I found out later that her neck was extremely painful but she took him anyway.  She ended up needing surgery a day or so later.  She had a high pain tolerance but a greater heart to help others!  She was always willing to go the extra mile when it came to being a friend.  

Now her cooking would not be considered "heart healthy" or "low calorie" but you couldn't find much tastier.  A lot of times at Christmas, Karen would call and say she had "something to bring up to us."  We all secretly hoped it was her turtles.  I don't think they ever lasted more than a day!  She told me recently that her new addition to her meals was whip cream.  Even the few times we got to play cards at their house, Karen would make sure she had a good meal to feed us.  Henry was grateful!  She also brought meals to us after I was in the hospital, along with a beautiful arrangement of flowers that she put together herself.  She didn't need a special occasion to share her cooking.  She was a great cook and a gracious hostess.  

Karen loved God!  During the fall and winter, she shared with me a book she was reading that compared today's time with the time in the Bible.  She was very excited about it and could hardly wait to read the next book in the series.  She thought the fulfillment of Revelations was coming soon!  She liked President Trump partly because he brought God back into our country.

In regards to Jim, Karen told me on a few occasions of her prayer or pretty much of her "telling" God that she had pretty much had it with men.  She said shortly before she met Jim, she had told God that she wanted a man about 6ft. tall, certain color of eyes (Jim's color), wore a suit to work, and treated her like an angel.  She would always grin when she would say how God had answered all of her requests with Jim.  She loved her husband!

Karen was so very proud of her boys and their families!  She was very proud to have recently finished Amelia's Christmas stocking.  I was amazed at how many hours it took her to make the felt tree skirt, stocking sand ornaments, all because she loved her family.  She told me that when they were a young family and she was still teaching dance classes, that she came home one night from lessons and realized her family had been eating cereal for dinner.  Karen quit working and stayed home to care for them.  She was always sharing about what her grandkids were up to with sports, academics, etc...  Karen also showed me the picture of Amelia praying and shared just how tickled she was that she was praying and to have a priceless picture of it.  Her grandchildren were her pride and joy!  When I would visit there house, she made sure I saw their pictures and would mention something special about each of them!

We loved Karen and miss her greatly!  I miss being able to call her up or her calling me to say, "Hey, what's up."  You all are greatly blessed to have had such a wonderful and faithful wife, loving and proud mother and grandmother!

May God strengthen each of you in the days ahead and may His provision of Karen in your lives draw you closer in your relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

I will never forget the first time meeting Karen! Jim brought her to the family Christmas when they first began dating. It was obvious that they were already in love! I knew without a doubt that wedding bells were going to be ringing shortly. By summer they got married. 
Karen wanted to begin a family right after they were married. At Jim's sister's, Sandra's baby shower, she announced that she was pregnant. I told her that I thought that I might be as well. Our boys, Jimmie & Aaron are 5 weeks apart. The following Christmas was a lot of fun with three new babies! Two years later, Justin came along. Our boys have always enjoyed being together throughout the years.
Karen and I clicked immediately! We spent many nights staying up late @ the lake house for family gatherings after everyone else went to bed. We always loved seeing each other & visiting at family gatherings. She invited me to go the Horseshoe with her and we had a great time that weekend seeing Willie Nelson & Martina McBride.
Karen was a little spitfire! As they always say, Dynamite comes in small packages. She never shied away from sharing her opinion regarding politics, religion or any topic that she was passionate about. 
We have both had health issues in our later years. We talked about our faith. One thing that I know, Karen is dancing with the angels right now! 
I know it's left a big hole in Jim's heart, as well as his boys and their families/grandkids. Jim, our prayers are with you!

As hard as this is to accept; I have to say at the same time I am so thankful to have a lifetime of memories with Karen and they sure bring a smile to my face.  We were inseparable as kids and even though the miles separated us as adults, we could always pick up right where we left off.  Karen’s friendship was a blessing from God.  She is the sister I didn’t have.  One of my fondest memories is when we were little our moms would take us shopping at the first of summer and buy us matching swimsuits and sometimes a matching short set.  Of course mine was always bigger.  I love you Karen and I pray God’s peace and comfort will surround Jim, Jimmy, Justin, and your family.

She was a beautiful soul, such an inspiration to all she met.  Always encouraging others to be their best. My mentor in drill team and my friend. 

Karen was one of my most unique friends! We first met when kids were early elementary & decided to take on Cub Scouts together & I recall a crazy Boy Scout camp week we volunteered for! Our family friendship grew to lake fun at their lake house, ski trips, family outings , & even Jim’s work fun & fancy events!  Well 2 weddings  of their kids & 2 of ours...Love You Jim,  Jimmy, Justin & Your Awesome Families!!!
