The Life of James C. Johnson
THE BEGINNING
James C. Johnson was born in Yazoo City, Mississippi on October 14, 1932 to the parentage of Corine Chaney.
CHILDHOOD
James grew up in Yazoo City, Mississippi, where he received his formal education from the local schools in Yazoo City. Upon graduating from Yazoo City High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force.
YOUNG LOVE
Prior to completing his final year of high school, James met a beautiful young lady, Joan Lockett. After a brief courtship, James and Joan were married on June 6, 1952 in Yazoo City, Mississippi. To this union, four children were born: Jeffery, Jarvis, Jennifer and Jerome. James was a reliable provider and fierce protector of his wife and children. Throughout his lifetime, James' favorite topic of conversation was how he met his wife, whom he affectionately referred to as “Honey”.
EDUCATION & CAREER
After 21 years of service in the United States Air Force, James retired in 1974 and enrolled in classes at East Texas State University (now known as Texas A&M Commerce). After completing his undergraduate studies, James began a new career as an Associate Professor of Automotive Technology at Tarrant County College, where he worked for 25 years before retiring.
CHRISTIAN SERVICE
James accepted Christ as his personal Savior when he was a young child, and was baptized at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Yazoo City Mississippi. After traveling the world during his tenure in the United States Air Force, James and his family settled in Fort Worth, Texas where they united with the Pleasant Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church. James was a faithful member of the Male Chorus, Brotherhood and Sunday School until his health began to fail. Singing in the Male Chorus was his favorite activity, and he was a frequent lead soloist on songs such as, “I Am So Grateful”, “I’m Still Growing” and “Since I Met Jesus”.
TRANSITION TO A NEW HOME
At 1:15pm on Saturday, January 30, 2021 James transitioned from earthly labor to heavenly reward. He is preceded in death by his mother, Corine Townsey, his grandmother, Rebecca Chaney, his daughter, Jennifer Ann Johnson, and his daughter-in-law, Cynthia Walker Johnson.
PRECIOUS MEMORIES
Precious memories of James will forever be treasured by his wife, Joan and his sons, Jeffery, Jarvis and Jerome (Debra). Also left to cherish memories of James are his seven grandchildren: Twana Edwards Dixon, Dionna Davis (Marcus), Juan Johnson, Jarvia Johnson, Julian Johnson, Jennifer Johnson, and Jacoby Johnson; six great-grandchildren: Denisha Simmons, Jhadae Gray, Brionna Jones, Kennedy Holmes, Jordynn Johnson, and Juelz Johnson; and 4 great-great grandchildren: Paxton Gonzalez, Elijah Gray, Ella Gray, and Elias Gray, along with a host of relatives, friends, and church family. James had a large extended family, including his adopted children: Larry Humphrey (Charlotte), Robert Huey-you, Rachel B. Jones, John Rush Vann, Jr., Elizabeth Vann, Claire Vann and Susanna Penney.
