Mr. Fred Edward Owens Jr. was born into life on December 11, 1948, to Fred Edward Owens, Sr., and Dorothy Ree Roberts in Dallas, Texas. Fred was affectionally known as Dad, Fred Jr., Uncle Fred, and proudly displayed “Semper Fi” and Marine emblems on every vehicle he owned. He attended Como Elementary, Como High School, and later received his diploma while in the military. In high school, Mr. Owens played football and was known for his athleticism as a pitcher and a second baseman.
Mr. Owens fulfilled two enlistments in the United States Marine Corps from July 1967 to July 1973. During his service to his country, he achieved the rank of Sergeant (E-5) as a Howitzer Cannoneer, Engineer Equipment Operator, and a Field Artillery Battery Man. As a Marine, he served his country in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Okinawa, Japan, and in the Republic of South Vietnam. In the War of Vietnam, Mr. Owens was wounded in battle as he held a grenade which exploded in the palm of his hand. His bravery was recognized by the United States Armed Forces, and he was honored and decorated with the following medals and ribbons that he wears proudly: the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnamese Service Medal with seven stars, Marksmanship Badge-Rifle, Vietnamese Campaign with device, Vietnamese Cross Gallantry with frame and with palm, and last but not least, the Purple Heart Medal. He was honorably discharged as a disabled veteran and lived the remainder of his life in the Lake Como Community. A fun fact to share, Mr. Owens tried out as a pitcher for the Texas Rangers in the early 1970s.
He is preceded in death by his father, Fred Edward Owens Sr; his Mother, Dorothy Ree Roberts Stanton; his stepfather, Calvin C. Stanton, Sr.; his brother, Calvin C. Stanton, Jr.; and his niece, LaTisha D. Jackson.
