Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, May 1, at 11:00 am at Arborlawn United Church, 5001 Briarhaven Road where Clyde was a member, usher and member of the New Hope Sunday school class. Interment will be at Laurel Land in Fort Worth.
Masks will be required at the funeral. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Arborlawn United Methodist Church to their Foundation or Food Pantry.
Clyde was born in Corapeake, North Carolina, on November 16, 1940 to the late Emmett Elmo and Annie Taylor Benton. After serving as an MP in the US Army, Clyde worked for the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad in Richmond, Virginia, later transferring to Columbia, South Carolina. He was later employed by the Frisco Railroad and moved to Greenville, South Carolina, Oklahoma City and Fort Worth. After 30 years of service, Clyde retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad as Assistant Market Manager, Government and Consumer Products.
Clyde was past president of the Transportation Club of the Fort Worth Chapter and a member of Delta Nu Alpha Transportation Fraternity. He was an avid golfer and a long time member of Glen Garden Country Club until it closed and until age 75 played senior tournament softball, traveling to several states for tournaments. In 1986 Clyde became a volunteer for the golf tournaments held at Colonial Country Club, first as a marshall and later in transportation driving golfers to and from the airport. When his sons, Chris and Mark were growing up he coached their baseball teams at Blue Raider (now WMCA Fields), later umpiring other teams, then, for several years, becoming a referee at high school basketball games. For 12 years Clyde was the owner of Critter Companion, a pet sitting business.
Clyde was preceded in death by his son Mark (2012) and brother Jesse (1968). He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marty, son Chris and his two beloved grandkids who he followed over the years watching Davis play t-ball and now playing baseball in college and attending many high school football games to watch Skyler cheerleading, his siblings, Emmett Elmo (Lois Ann), John (Mary Alice), Linwood (Phyllis), Ruby (Mallory), Shirley, and Walter Lee (Lena) who live in North Carolina and Virginia as well as many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Marty's sister, Bonnie, and her husband Jerry who reside in Virginia.
