Sarah "Liz" Elizabeth Hagan

Sarah Elizabeth “Liz” Hagan, age 93, of Fort Wayne, Indiana passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2024. She was born March 24, 1931 in Lima, Ohio to the late John Michael Eavey and Ida Zoe (Eversole) Eavey.

Liz attended Central High School in Fort Wayne where she majored in Art, English and Math and for extra curricula’s, was editor of the school paper, member of the English Club and member of the Press Club. Liz was a member of the National Honor Society. She broadened her education during that time frame by also attending Fort Wayne Art School taking Saturday art classes. She also took courses in gift wrapping and lettering.

Liz met her husband, Floyd E. Erexson at Bells Skating Rink in Fort Wayne and they were wed on May 21, 1951. From their union came their son, who broke the mold, Clayton Wayne Erexson, or otherwise lovingly called “Wayney Bug” by his mother. Liz and Floyd were married for over fifty-two years before his passing in August 2003.

After marriage, Liz worked part-time at Henderson-Reed Lawn & Garden Center as a sales clerk and specialized in making their Christmas wreaths and grave blankets. She held positions as well at Slocum Grade School as a special education aide, J.J. R. Transportation Corporation as a special education bus driver and even took a spin at assembly line work at Capehart/Farnsworth and sales clerk at both Wolf & Dressaur Department Store and Kerrison’s Department Store (Charleston, SC). In September 1989 Liz began working for Fairfield’s Rare Coins & Jewelry and remained there for the next eighteen years until her retirement in 2007, being treated like family for the entirety of her time employed.

One of Liz’s most unique passions was a program she collaborated on with her husband Floyd, called “Inspirations in Chalk”. The couple belonged to and were active in “The Fellowship of Christian Magicians” and would spend a week each summer attending chalk art classes and even lecturing on the subject. The Erexson’s would share their faith based program and enjoyed lifting fellow church clubs and organizations up by presenting their inspirational, black light enhanced scenes drawn in chalk with a background of meaningful scripture, stories and music. Often times the couple would be asked to leave their artwork at the Church for members to be able to enjoy.

Liz and family, being faithful followers of Christ, have been over time affiliated with South Wayne United Methodist Church, Avalon Missionary Church, Southwest Church of God and Wesleyan Redeemer. Some churches still have beautiful banners that were made and graciously donated by Liz hanging in their buildings.

Liz had a lifelong passion for the arts and it reflected in her every day. While she took the time to hone in on her artistic abilities and share her fondness of the craft with all around her, it was truly her family and friends that were her life passion. She was a friend to all and was often stopped for a welcoming greeting by friends made through her years of Church, work, workshops or even from her days of Camp Counselor at Camp Lakewood.

Marriage to her second husband, Charles W. Hagan, on May 26, 2007 was of no exception and along with their love of Christ, life and family together were the most important things in their world. The branches on both family trees simply expanded with their union as they all came together as one. The couple remained happily married until his passing in March 2016. Memories treasured by the family were times spent in the pool in the back yard and the special treat of “Swiss Cake Rolls at Grandma’s”.

Liz is survived by her son Clayton Wayne (Marilyn) Erexson; grandchildren, Eric (Faith) Erexson, Melinda (Justin) Roberson, and Amanda (Ben) Murray; and great-grandchildren, Ivy, Violet, Clayton, Lily, Noah, Xander and Ember. She is as well survived by her step-children, Michael (Ellen) Hagan and Ilene Hill; step grandchildren, Justin (Yvonne) Meisner, Steven Hagan, April (Jason) Johnson and Michele (Tim) Fritz; step great-grandchildren, Audrey, Max, and Jake Meisner, Amber, Jayme and Piper Hagan, Koby and Isabel Johnson, Jackson and Charles Fritz. Liz will be lovingly missed by her brothers, John Michael Eavey Jr. and Jerome “Jake” (Eschol) Eavey. Nieces, nephews, family and friends surviving will always hold their time spent with treasure.

She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved life partners, Floyd E. Erexson and Charles W. Hagan; son-in-law and loving husband to Ilene, Stan Hill; sister, Armita Crane; brother, George Marion; and sister-in-law, Hope Eavey.

Funeral service is 1:00 pm Friday, October 11, 2024, D.O. McComb & Sons Funeral Homes - Covington Knolls, 8325 Covington Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46804 with calling one hour prior. Family and friends will be received 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm Thursday, October 10, 2024 at the funeral home. Final resting place Covington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
