James graduated from South Side High School in 1960. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and served from 1960-1964. He retired from Zollner Piston after 38 years of service. James was an avid NASCAR fan. In 2018, he was finally able to purchase his lifelong dream: a Ford 1923 T Bucket, and enjoyed winning at car shows. His true passion was spending time with his family. He is survived by his children, Jami (Dave Winn) Lay of Butler, IN, Jodi Speck-McIntosh, James (Kris) Speck II; son-in-law, Mike Miller, all of Fort Wayne, IN; grandchildren, Adam, Amber, Andrew, Joseph, Paul, Hillary, Sydney, Mackenzie, Lauren, Paige, and Brandon; and 14 great-grandchildren. James was preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 59 years, Vickie L. Speck; daughter, Janna C. Miller; brother, William George Speck Jr.; and a sister, Sandra Bay.
A funeral service to honor his memory will be held at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at D.O. McComb and Sons Maplewood Park Funeral Home, 4017 Maplecrest Road, Fort Wayne, with a visitation beginning at 11:00am, until time of service. James will be laid to rest at Riverview Cemetery, Churubusco, Indiana.
