Dr. William “Bill” Griggs III, 81, of Fort Smith, passed away Thursday, December 27, 2018. He was born July 11, 1937 in Pennington Gap, VA to the late William L. Griggs, Jr. and Dorothy Mae Fugate Griggs. He was the first Neurologist in Northwest Arkansas. He was the President/Owner of Southwest Neurological Institute. He was the Head of Neurology at Holt Krock Clinic from 1972 -1999, Board of Directors Holt-Krock Clinic 1975-1980, Chairman, Department of Neurology for Scott and White Clinic and Hospital 1970-1973, Director, Neurophysiology Laboratory Sparks Regional Medical Center 1972-1998, Staff Neurologist St. Edward Mercy Medical Center 1972-2005 and Staff Neurologist Crawford County Memorial Hospital. He was former Board Member of the United Way-Salvation Army, member of Big Brother and Big Sister of Western, AR, member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Advisory Board of Western Arkansas Alzheimer’s Association, member of Downtown Fort Smith Rotary Club, Lifelong Rotarian, Founder and a Board Member of Good Samaritan, Life Membership in the Arkansas Medical Society, and a Veteran of the United States Army. His first wife Marion “Murnie” Griggs preceded him in death.
Funeral service will be 10:30 AM Monday at St. Paul United Methodist Church with burial to follow at Fort Smith National Cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife Shirley Griggs, daughter Sarah Griggs Chase and husband Joe of Baytown, TX, sons, Charles Griggs and wife Paula of Missouri City, TX and Bill Griggs and wife Michelle of Fort Smith; sister, Barbara Griggs Friend of Pikeville, KY, eight grandchildren; James Chase and wife Leslie of Baytown, TX, Elizabeth Dreyer and husband Ahren of Mt. Belvieu, TX, Anna Griggs of Richardson, TX, Emma Griggs of Fayetteville, AR, Elise Griggs of Missouri City, TX, Creighton Griggs of Missouri City, TX, David Blake and wife Megan of Fort Smith, AR and John Blake of Fort Smith, AR and two great grandchildren Maximus Blake and Brayden Blake of Fort Smith, AR.
Pallbearers are James Chase, Creighton Griggs, David Blake, John Blake, Dick Boyett and Don Lewison. Honorary pallbearers will be Tan Dai and The Cliff Hangers Sunday School Class of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be Sunday afternoon from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Edwards Funeral Home.
