Gordon “Bill” Yearty, 89, of Fort Smith, died February 4, 2010 in Fort Smith. He was born August 20, 1920 in Otter Creek, Florida to William S. and Lula Hudson Yearty. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1943, and served in World War II in the United States Merchant Marines. He was an Oil and Gas Lease Businessman in Arkansas and Oklahoma and was an Insurance Adjuster for the General Adjustment Bureau. He retired as a beloved Social Studies teacher for Van Buren High School where he served from 1962-1982.
He is survived by two step daughters, Linda Walsh of Muldrow, OK and Cassandra Wagoner of Wickenburg, Arizona; one nephew, John Sher of Highland Village, Texas; eight grandchildren and several great grandchildren along with numerous other nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Gennievie Yearty, three sisters and three brothers.
Memorial service will be Friday, February 26, 2010 at 2:00 PM in the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel. Private burial will be in the U.S. National Cemetery. Cremation and services are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Friends from Van Buren high School.
