Donald G. Watts, 85, of Fort Smith, died March 21, 2012 in Fort Smith. He was born July 14, 1926 in Huntington, West Virginia to Jennings Bryan and Willie Mai Witham Watts. He attended Huntington Public Schools, Marshall College, and Vanderbilt University where he received a B.A. in Economics in 1950. During World War II, he served in the United States Army, company E, 165 Infantry of the 27th Division, as a communications sergeant in the island-hopping march across the Pacific. At the end of the War he served a year in Tokyo, as a provost sergeant in the 720 Military Police Battalion during the early occupation of Japan. After returning to the United States, he spent thirty-six years in the automobile business, as a new car salesman, general manager, and dealer. He married his beloved wife Betty Ann Brown also of Huntington in 1953. Don was a man of many interests, genealogy, early American History, fishing and writing to mention a few. During the past fifteen years Don has been a writing instructor in “Write Your Life Story,” a writing class for senior citizens in Fort Smith, AR.
He is survived by two sons, Jennings Randolph Watts and his wife Lynne Marie of Arlington, Texas and James Bradley Watts and his wife Patt of Huntington, West Virginia; and one grandson, Evan Lewis Watts of Arlington, Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Ann Watts on February 1, 2011 in Fort Smith. Don requested that her cremated remains be interment with him in the U.S. National Cemetery at the time of his death.
Funeral service will be Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at 10:00 am in the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in the U.S. National Cemetery all under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Evan Watts, Gregory, Collin, and Lynde DeLung.
Honorary pallbearers will be member of the Micropterus Dolomieu Society.
The family will greet friends at Edwards Funeral Home on Monday evening from 5-7 PM
