Carl Allen Hill was born in Portia, Arkansas on January 13, 1939, to Ray Arthur and Ruby Chloe Hill and died on June 14, 2022, surrounded by his immediate family members at his home in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
He graduated from Hoxie High School in the class of 1956 and attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where he received his Doctor of Education degree in 1970. Carl also served in the U.S. Army from 1958 – 1960, spending 18 months in Korea.
He coached high school basketball at several schools in Arkansas and Missouri, and after obtaining his Doctorate, he taught 4 years at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. From there, he moved to Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, where he remained for the next 30 years in the Department of Kinesiology, serving two terms as the Department Head. While at LSU, Carl was an Area Coordinator for Phi Delta Kappa (Honorary Education Fraternity), he taught in the Department of Continuing Education at LSU, and he served on the National Special Olympics Committee.
A lifelong, loyal member of the United Methodist Church, Carl served as a delegate to both the Louisiana and Arkansas United Methodist conferences. He served on the administrative boards of First United Methodist Churches in Baton Rouge and Fort Smith. Carl put his love of biblical research and his professorial skills to good use as an enthusiastic Sunday school teacher.
Carl was a dedicated sportsman. He was a ranked tennis player in Louisiana and the Southern Section of the United States Tennis Association, he was a referee for high school football and basketball games in both Arkansas and Louisiana, and Carl was an avid saltwater fisherman in Louisiana and trout fisherman in Arkansas. He retired from LSU in 2004 and moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas in 2006.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma, a son, Barry Hill (Rhonda) of Little Rock, Arkansas; a daughter, Robin Hartman (Daniel Chidester) of Lincoln, Arkansas; grandsons Cohen Hartman (Stephanie) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Darcy Chidester of Lincoln, Arkansas; Ransom Hill of Little Rock, Arkansas; great grandson, Weston Hartman, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; niece Margaret Beard (Robert) of Pocahontas, Arkansas; nephew Allyn Tatum (Lois Ann) of Jacksonville, Arkansas; great niece Felicia Detherage of Fayetteville, Arkansas; great nephew Skyler Detherage of Gravette, Arkansas; great niece Lichelle Waugh of Batesville, Arkansas; great nephew Mark Tatum of Cabot Arkansas; and great niece Juliet Batategas of Trikala, Greece.
Arrangements are with Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith, Arkansas, with the service to be held at First United Methodist Church Roebuck Chapel of Fort Smith at 11:30am on Friday, June 17, 2022. Burial will follow at Fort Smith National Cemetery.
