SALESKI, Ilse
June 21, 1934 – May 5, 2019
“My God Is Bountiful”
On the morning of May 5th I was honoured and blessed to be with my darling Mom when she peacefully left her earthly body to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in the place He has promised to prepare for us.
Ilse is survived by her loving daughter, Dorothee, her younger sister Walli Petersen, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, family and friends both in Germany and in Canada.
She was predeceased by her infant brother, Gerhard, her parents, and her daughter’s father, Heinz Saleski.
Ilse was born on June 21, 1934, in Barchuwka, Poland, the second child to Oskar and Leokadia (Charlotte) Rolow. The family endured many trials during the war years. Mom never talked much about the first ten years of her life, only saying, it was terrible and is best left behind.
In 1946 the family fled Poland and entered Germany as refugees. They settled in Glueckstadt and the girls started schooling to get caught up to their peers. Following her confirmation in the Lutheran State Church, the family moved again and settled in Emmendingen in the Black Forest Area. Here began her lifelong love of learning! Ilse completed an apprenticeship in retail/commerce, which earned her the Grade 12 equivalent. It was during this time that Ilse met Jesus, her Saviour, in a very personal way, and loving HIM became her utmost goal.
In 1954, in order to perfect her English skill, Ilse joined her good friend, Irmgard, to work as a domestic and nanny, and later a cross entry clerk at the Canadian Bank of Commerce in Toronto, Canada.
In 1959, Ilse returned to Germany to complete three year of Bible School training at Brake Bible School, her goal being ‘Missions’. However, her health did not allow her to qualify to work in the tropics.
1963 saw her begin a training program in midwifery, a career she enjoyed immensely, and was very good at. Ilse was highly respected by her superiors and her peers.
In 1965 Ilse married the love of her life, Heinz Saleski. They had a much loved and anticipated daughter and Ilse named her “Dorothee”, her “Gift of God”. Ilse loved being a Mom and gave it her all! The new family settled in Gudensberg-Obervorschuetz and built a beautiful home.
In 1977, another of Mom’s dreams came true. We immigrated to her beloved Canada!!! Toronto, Kitchener, and finally Winnipeg became home to us. In Winnipeg, Ilse thrived on being a mom and homemaker, gardening, caring for all those in her circle of friends, and more learning…. There was accounting, bookkeeping, tax preparation, reflexology, hobby farming, licensed practical nursing, countless craft courses, etc. She was an inspiration to her daughter!
1993 everything changed and Ilse had to rally again. Due to a very abusive situation, Ilse had to leave her marriage and came to Edmonton, where Dorothee resided. We settled in Lamont, Alberta and Ilse once again embarked on a learning journey in dental office administration, chairside attending, and instrument sterilization. Ilse loved people and knew how to instantly put them at ease. Her smile lit up the room and will be remembered by many. 2014 the diagnosis of dementia changed everything in our lives. There was a slow but steady decline and many losses. The final year of her life was spent in the tender loving care of the doctors and staff at Lamont Health Care Centre, Continuing Care. Thank you to all who helped ease the pain of our journey!
Ilse learned to persevere and trust in her God, and that helped her succeed with humility, despite many hardships.
My God is Bountiful! Rest in Peace, Mom! We love you!
