STEPHENS - Bert (Albert Lesley) Stephens passed away in the Balcarres Integrated Care Centre at Balcarres on the 23rd of November, 2011. Bert was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Lydia in 1964, sisters Gladys (Mel) Moonie in 1975, Pearl (Bert) Myers in 1999, Ruby (Walter) Large in 1998 who was predeceased by her 1st husband David Meikle (1982), brother Alvin (Beryl) Stephens (2011), brothers Harold in 1919 and Norman in 1980. Bert will be greatly missed by niece Dorothy (Ervin) Baber and family, niece Barbara (Clifford) Krieger and family, and nephew Dave (Wanda) Stephens and family. Bert was born January 7th, 1922 on the home farm. He attended Violette School through the 1930's, then worked the home farm 4 miles north of Balcarres. Bert was the recipient of The Century Family Farm Award plaque in 1982. The farm was the 1882 homestead of his grandfather, Arthur Newstead. After retiring from farming, Bert continued to live in the farmhouse on the home quarter until moving into Balcarres in 2008. Bert loved the farm, the birds, the animals, and generally being outdoors. He enjoyed cross-country skiing, walking, and sharing his love of nature with visiting nieces, nephews and their children. Bert enjoyed his many fishing trips to local lakes and his yearly fishing trip to northern Saskatchewan with Alvin Stephens, Norman Stephens, Roy Meikle, Dave Stephens, David Hyndman, and Ervin Baber. Bert was an avid card player, especially fond of playing cribbage and dice with family and neighbors. Bert will be remembered for his love of family and friends. Donations in memory of Bert may be made to the Balcarres Integrated Care Centre. At Bert's request there will be no funeral. A private interment will be held at a later date.
