Nancy Jean Miller, 85, our beloved mother and grandmother, passed away and joined her late husband and caregiver, Leo Miller, on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Treasure Coast Hospice in Stuart with her loving daughter, Susan, by her side.
Born in Owensboro, KY, Nancy had been a resident of Fort Pierce for 57 years.
In her younger years, Nancy was an avid tennis player and had enjoyed professional tennis matches later in her life. Nancy drove a school bus for the St. Lucie County School district for 10 years where she enjoyed her time with both the children and the friends she had acquired during that time. She was a homemaker for many years, an excellent cook and had passed her talent unto her daughters as well.
In her spare time Nancy had become an excellent seamstress and sold a variety of aprons, potholders and children’s clothing at a unique mountainside country shoppe in North Carolina where she also created, baked and sold her famous “The Original Mrs. Millers Apple Cakes” to many customers that would come from miles around just to purchase these delicious delicacies. These scrumptious delights were also offered at many fine dining restaurants in Asheville, North Carolina. After retiring, Nancy passed this recipe down to her daughter, Susan, who will carry on the family tradition.
Nancy, along with her husband, Leo, spent over 20 years enjoying their cabin in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, where she founded “The Original Mrs. Millers Apple Cakes”. She cherished her time in the mountains where she and her daughter Jeanie had embarked on many adventurous hikes and had spent countless memorable moments together. Mom and Jeanie had always shared an exceptionally deep bond of love with one another and it will be treasured forever.
Nancy left behind three children, Steve Miller (Patty), Susan J. Miller, Jeanie Miller Ogden (John), three grandchildren, John Nagy, Kelly Sherrow, Julie Reitz and four great grandchildren, McKayden, Addie, Liam, and Owen.
We would like to thank a few of our mother’s healthcare professionals for their dedicated care such as, Dr. Michael Maraist of Port St Lucie; Dr. Whitney Legler, of Vero Beach and the team at Treasure Coast Hospice in Stuart, FL. A special thank you to her son, Steve, his wife, Patty and her loving CNA, Erin for their devotion.
Our mother was a wonderful example of what would be defined as a “pillar of strength” for she believed in the values of family and that home is where the heart is. We admire her faithfulness to our beloved father, her husband Leo, for they had been married for 67 years October 2nd. Thank you mom for setting a wonderful example for us, we love you to the moon and back and you will forever be in our hearts.
A graveside service will be held at 2:30pm on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Fort Pierce, FL.
Arrangements are under the care of Aycock Funeral Home in Fort Pierce, FL.
