Dr. Robert B. McKenney was born on November 18, 1929 in West Chester, PA. His mother was, Ruth A. McKenney and father unknown. From age 5 M. L. Jones and Else Jones at Maple Shade Farm in Westtown, PA raised him until graduation from West Chester High in 1947. While in High School, he was very active in sports such as track and football.
In 1948, her married Dorothy J. Grover and moved to Michigan for a few years, returning to Pennsylvania to farm the Maple Shade Farm for Marshall Jones. In 1955, he decided to seek a higher education and the family moved to Alma, Michigan, where he attended Alma College, taking classes to enter Dental School. He entered the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1958 and graduated in 1962 with a DDS degree. Dr. McKenney started his dental practice in Brighton, Michigan and Dorothy taught school there. Robert and Dorothy lived at The Lake of The Pines in Brighton. Dr. McKenney was very active in community affairs and belonged to many dental organizations such as, ADA, MDA, CDA and Livingston Dental Association. He was past president of the Bunting Periodontal Study Club, a member of the Flying Dental Association and the Dental Crown and Bridge Society. The Flying Dental Association encouraged trips to help the less fortunate. Dr. McKenney made several trips to Central America with his airplane, taking supplies to treat the natives there. He was active in the Brighton community and was former Vice President of the School Board. He was also Past President of Brighton Kiwanis Club that performed many activities and services for the community.
Dr. McKenney’s wife of 63 years, Dorothy J. McKenney, preceded him in death on January 12, 2012. Their children are, sons, Robert Jr., Richard and Randal. Grandchildren, Robert III, Jodie Lemke, Ryan McKenney and Natalie Jentzen; nine great grandchildren.
In the years after Dorothy’s death, Dr. McKenney spent his time in Fort Myers, Florida and was often seen on the golf course at The Forest Country Club where he has been a member since 1979 when the course first opened. Since 2012, Dr. McKenney has had a partner, Lois Mowers, and lived at 6133 Forest Villas Circle in Fort Myers where they have many friends and golfing partners.
