Fort Myers lost one of its own last week when Harry Popham Jr. passed away after a short but
courageous battle with cancer. Harry was born in Galesburg, Il on October 2,1953. He came to
Fort Myers with his family shortly after and lived here ever since. He grew up where the Midpoint
Bridge is today. Harry played many sports like most youngsters, but golf was his passion. He
won two Club Championships and the Michigan State Jaycee titles while spending summers in
Illinois. After college Harry worked in sales before opening his own restaurant called Harry’s
Restaurant and Lounge in 1982. Harry’s was located where the Olive Garden is today. It was at
the time the largest in town, seating over six hundred people with the bar seating forty-five alone.
Two years into operation the Department of Alcohol Beverage and Tobacco sued Harry’s saying
that a full menu was not available during all hours of alcohol service. Harry’s won this lawsuit
which caused the rewriting of the definition of a “full menu” that stands as the Precedent to this
day. After selling Harry’s in 1985 Harry went back into real estate selling and flipping homes until
1990. He and his partner at that time were awarded a two year contract to oversee the resale of
homes for the Department of H.U.D. That contract was renewed five times. During that span
Harry oversaw the maintenance, management and sales of over two thousand homes. During
this time Harry was always at the forefront of entertainment and gatherings such as organizing
“Harry’s Holiday Trolley Rides” trips to the Cubs and Marlins baseball games and the well known
football and golf pools. He always wanted everyone to have a grand time. Harry loved to party
sometimes, maybe a little too much. When Harry threw a party you could count on there being
delicious food and a bar that never closed. Harry touched so many lives in so many ways with
his infectious laugh, big personality and tenacious spirit for life. He brought such joy and
happiness to all who knew him. Harry was a man that lived life to the fullest that will be forever
missed.
