Samuel C. McCollum, 88, of Ft. Lauderdale, passed away November 15, 2015 at home and surrounded by family. He was born March 22, 1927, in Terre Haute, Indiana, the son of Edith Quillman McCollum and Herbert Clayton McCollum.
He married Shirley Wisuri on November 11, 1951. They marked their 64th wedding anniversary five days before his passing.
After serving in the Navy, Sam graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in engineering. He worked for Johns Manville, General Electric, Sangamo Electric in Springfield, Illinois, and later for Schlumberger in Atlanta, Georgia. He retired from Schlumberger and joined Shirley in a business they built together, Business World. In his second retirement, Sam became known for his invention of the “great Samtini”—his beverage of choice in both Fort Lauderdale and Iron River, Michigan, Shirley’s hometown.
Sam was described in his high school yearbook as “one of the grandest fellows you’d ever hope to meet.” The description held true throughout his life, and in condolences, he was universally referred to as one of the nicest people ever met. He was an honorable man and he could fix just about anything. He and Shirley enjoyed sailing trips with friends to Tahiti, the British Virgin Islands and the Greek islands. When sailing became too strenuous, he and Shirley went on numerous cruises from Alaska to New Zealand and all over South America.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Sandra McCollum (Harland Blixt), and Deed McCollum (Dale Broholm); and five grandchildren: Judah Domke, Callista Fink, Anna Broholm, Gage Fink and Tessa Broholm. He has one great grandson, Anders Domke.
