Nancy S. Palumbo passed into the grace of God, Sunday, October 31, 2021. She passed peacefully at her daughter Victoria and son-in-law Paul Pellicer’s home in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where she had been living and being cared for the last 8 years.
She is predeceased by her only sister, Elena, her parents, Biagio Serravalle and Francesca (Serravalle) Coco, Stepfather Felix Coco, and her loving husband, Vito Palumbo.
Nancy Serravalle was born on January 23, 1930 in Bronte, Province Catania, Sicily. Nancy’s father, Biagio, passed away when she was just 5 years old. She remained in Sicily through the duration of WWII. Although Nancy endured great challenges growing up in Sicily, she always recounted the beauty, bounty, and family from her childhood home. Nancy embarked alone on an unforgettable 13-day ocean voyage to Ellis Island, New York to reunite with her mother and stepfather.
The re-united family relocated to Arlington, Virginia and in 1950, Nancy attended the Americanization School in Washington DC where she earned her US Citizenship. She was always very proud of becoming an American Citizen as well as her personal achievements during that time.
In 1951 she married Vito Palumbo, her husband of 63 years. They lived with her new in-laws and she worked for the family business, A. Palumbo & Son Inc. in Washington D.C., while starting their family. Eventually they moved to Hyattsville, Maryland and purchased their own home. Nancy became an accomplished homemaker while raising her four daughters, Josie Gibson (Don), Melinda Quinn (John), Marianne Dameron (Ronald), and Victoria Pellicer (Paul). Over the years, her family has grown with the addition of 5 grandchildren, Phillip, Daniel, Stephanie, Melissa, and Laura, and then 6 great-grandchildren, Nick, Logan, Alyssa, Anthony, Aubrey, and Alexis.
Nancy and Vito eventually retired and moved to Lutz, Florida to enjoy time together in the sun until his passing in 2014.
Nancy was exceptionally generous, loving, and youthful in nature. She had a charming and fierce sense of humor. To her, family always came first. She enjoyed the beauty of nature, gardening, and lunch by the ocean. Everyone who met her loved her and called her “Ma”.
Nancy will be deeply missed and affectionately remembered by her loved ones. The time that she spent with us will be celebrated for years and years to come.
Nancy's funeral service will commence on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at 11:30 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 901 NE 2nd Street, Fort Lauderdale, where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Entombment will take place in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, MD.
It can be a great comfort to a grieving person or family to hear that others thought highly of their loved one, too. If you knew and admired Nancy, be sure to let the family know by writing a few words in the "Memory" section of her obituary on the Kraeer - Fairchild Funeral Home website. www.KraeerFairchild.com
