On Sunday, December 4th, 2022, at approximately 6:45 a.m., God called Joyce Gordon home. God said her visit was over on earth and it was time for her to come home and take her place in heaven.
Joyce was born on September 20, 1933, in Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. W.I. She is the first daughter and the fourth child of Easton and Dorris Moxam. Her parents had seven children.
Joyce was known for her kindness and heart of gold to many people who came in contact with her. She fed strangers and homeless people who walked the streets by her home in Treasure Beach. Her home was open to all nieces, and nephews and became the “spot” for all the kids to gather and enjoy her nancy cakes, sweet potato pudding, and bun and cheese.
Joyce was a fighter at heart. She fought hard to care for her children single-handedly, and instilled values and ambition in each of them. Her children were her pride and joy.
Despite her humble beginnings, Joyce was a self-made entrepreneur. She opened a business, Treasure Hut, to care for her children and to build a life of her own. During these years, Joyce became well-known for her fried fish. She had a special talent for preparing escovitch fish that even her children have found hard to replicate. And, they have tried; and so have many others.
Later in the years, Joyce moved to the USA to join her children, where she worked as home health caretaker and soon bought herself a home. She was a hard worker and a frugal woman. Her generosity to her neighbors and friends continued in the USA. She would always offer food or anything she had to share with them.
Over time, Joyce was faced with diminishing health issues; yet she remained “entertaining” to those who came in contact with her. In the most recent weeks, she would tell her children that she was going soon and that she was ready. She wanted to prepare her children for her departure – although, they are never prepared. She died peacefully.
Joyce is preceded in death by her siblings Raphael, Lenny, and Ronald Moxam. Following the death of her last sibling Ronald in January 2022, she would always say “I am next because I am next in line of the siblings”. She knew her time was coming soon.
Joyce beautiful life will be forever cherished by the lives of her four children: June (Garey), Peter (Sonia), Stephen (Emily), and Jackie (Gilbert); grandchildren: Mikalei, Ashley, Kyle, Shanelle, Travis, Tyrel, and Anesia; step-grandchildren: Chase, Sage, Ashley G., Vronique, and Gilbert Jr.; Sisters: Zelrita “Carrie” Forest (Johnny), Zono “Sissy” Hew; Brother: Barry Moxam; Sister-in-law: Dorothy Moxam and Pearl Moxam, a plethora of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. They will miss her and treasure her memories as she has gone to rest in her heavenly home.
Godspeed.
