He was surrounded by family and in the comfort and care of his beloved caregivers at his home in Rainy River Health Centre’s long term care wing.
Laurie was born on Tuesday, August 12,1975 in Fort Frances, ON to Dennis and Beth Brown. He grew up in Stratton with his Mom, Dad and his brothers, Paul and Mark.
He attended Sturgeon Creek School and Rainy River High School. He completed his OAC’s at Fort Frances High School before enrolling in the University of Western Ontario, London. Laurie graduated with an honours degree in Religious Studies, and planned to attend Seminary in Saskatoon, SK where he aimed to study for his Masters of Divinity degree.
At the young age of 15, Laurie learned he had a cancerous brain tumour; and because of recurring health problems, he was no longer able to continue his studies at Seminary, and so he returned home to be with his family. He continued to battle the tumours the remainder of his life, having three surgeries during the spring/summer of 2017. Until his passing, Laurie’s faith never faltered and he was a courageous witness who shared his hope and vision with those he encountered.
In September of 2017, Laurie moved into Rainy River Extended Care, and there he flourished! He enjoyed being the favourite neighbour of the other residents; he loved to tease, talk and cheer on his amazing staff! Many mornings Laurie could be heard on the microphone sharing a joke, and all the current events of the day!
Laurie loved to spend quality time with family, and his precious nieces and nephews brought so much joy to him.
He will be greatly missed by his parents Dennis and Beth, brother Paul (Jodie) and their children Jude, Quinn, Burke, Hugh and Shalese; brother Mark (Natasha) and their children Addison, Nolan and Easton, his grandmother Dorothy Brown, aunts and uncles- Cyndi and Don Bolen, Don and Mary Brown, Joyce and Wayne Pollard, Janice and Creston Dorie, Pam Peters, Norman McQuaker, Harold and Shirley McQuaker, Jim and Susan McQuaker, Peter and Marlene McQuaker, Susan and Harold Norlund, Bud and Donna McQuaker, Joanne McQuaker and Buck Watson, as well as numerous cousins.
Laurie was predeceased by his infant sister Kari Anne, his niece Miami Chanel, Grandfather Raymond Brown, Grandparents Carson and Iris McQuaker, aunt and uncles, Dixie Watson, Robin McQuaker, Laurie McQuaker and David McQuaker, and by a very dear cousin, Ryan Bolen.
A Celebration of Laurie’s life will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2021, at 1:00 pm, at the Rainy River Evangelical Covenant Church.
COVID premise restrictions for attendance will apply.
Interment will take place at the Stratton Cemetery later this spring.
