He was born July 5, 1944 and passed on May 26th. In between he lived a full life married to our mother, Cecelia, for almost 52 years and blessed with 10 grandchildren. Many knew him as Coach but for us he was just Sug, Dad and Grandpa. He was strong and kind and a fighter till the end. He will be missed more than words can say.

Below please find a tribute by Michael Aylmer, Coach Russo’s former player and current Administrator We are saddened to share the passing of our father Joe Russo.
Coach Joe Russo, a well-accomplished baseball coach in the NCAA and otherwise, coached at Division I, St. John's University from 1973-96, where accumulated a spring record of 612-310 (.664).
Russo was a four-year baseball standout at St. John's, including serving as a team captain in 1966. He participated for two seasons in the famed Cape Cod League (1963-64) during the summer months, and later went on to represent the United States at the Global World Series in Hawai'i in 1966.
A 1997 inductee into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Russo's time as the bench boss at St. John's was legendary. He also registered a 399-133 mark in fall baseball contests with the Red Storm, good for an overall record of 1,011-443 (.695). Russo was twice named the BIG EAST Coach of the Year (1990-91), and in 1980 received Northeast Coach of the Year praise. The winningest head coach in St. John's history, he received a bachelor's degree from the school in history.
Internationally, Russo was the head coach of Team USA at the 1995 Pan American Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as well as for the New York/Tokyo Friendship Series in Japan from 1989-90. An experienced clinician, he has had a pair of books published: Championship Baseball: Techniques, Fundamentals and Drills (1985, Prentice-Hall); and The Fundamentals of Coaching and Playing Baseball (1998, Allyn and Bacon).
A winner of both the North Shore University Hospital and Police Athletic League service awards in 1990, Russo was inducted into the Abp. Molloy (1985) and Christ the King (1990) High School Halls of Fame for his illustrious accomplishments. He has coordinated both the Willie Randolph Summer Sports Experience, and Derek Jeter Turn 2 Foundation clinics throughout Queens and Manhattan for the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation.
