Fred John Kalakay

Fred John Kalakay, age 88 of Flushing, passed away on Thursday, July 20, 2017. He was born on May 24, 1929 in Flint to parents John and Mary (Swars) Kalakay. He graduated from Northern High School in 1947. He worked as a young man for his father at Johnny’s. Fred proudly served in the United States Army for five years and spending 16 months stationed in Korea. His unit was awarded the highest service award that can be received: Presidential Unit Citation. He retired as an engineer with Buick Motor Division in 1984 after 39 years of service. On May 2, 1953 Fred married Jennie Vukovich in Flint. Fred was a faithful member of St. Robert Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, playing ping pong, and playing golf. Fred was also an avid Detroit Pistons and Tigers fan. Fred is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Jennie Kalakay; children: Judy (Mike) Walling and Fred (Stephanie) Kalakay, Jr.; grandchildren: Amy (Brendin) Jacobs, Katie Walling, Keri Walling, Michael Kalakay, Blake Kalakay, Stacie Kalakay, and Sophie Kalakay; great grandchildren: Hadley Jacobs and Harper Jacobs; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both parents; daughter, Sue Kalakay; brothers: John Kalakay and Joe Kalakay; sisters: Annie Kimmel, Mary Marion, and Helen Cole. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at McLaren 6th floor CCU for the continuous care and compassion. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11am on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at St. Robert Catholic Church, 310 N. Cherry St., Flushing. Father Anthony Brooks celebrating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 23, 2017 from 4-8pm at Reigle Funeral Home, 5501 W. Pierson Rd., Flushing, and on Monday, July 24, 2017 from 2-8pm, with a Rosary Service at 7pm. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the service, beginning at 10am on Tuesday. Interment at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Those desiring may make a memorial contribution to St. Robert Catholic Church or Hospice House of Shiawassee County.
