Born on May 22, 1941, in Boston, Massachusetts, Maddie was the daughter of the late Laura and Michael Grasso. She graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1959 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Business from Bunker Hill Community College in Charlestown, Massachusetts. During her time in college, she worked as a hair/wig stylist at A&A Beauty Supply.
Following her graduation, Maddie worked for the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston before transitioning to a career in the food industry. She joined Merkert Enterprises, where she worked as a food broker, representing major accounts like Tropicana.
In 1993, Maddie met the love of her life, John W. Burnett Jr. (known as “Jack”), and the two married on October 4, 1997. In 2002, Maddie and Jack moved to sunny Palm Coast, Florida, where they spent their years together.
Maddie was a deeply devout woman and an active member of Shepherd of the Coast Lutheran Church in Palm Coast. She attended Bible study regularly, served on various church committees, and volunteered her time at the local cold weather shelter.
In her free time, Maddie enjoyed gardening and lovingly tended to her flowers and plants. She found joy in creating beauty with her hands, whether through intricate beadwork, delicate crocheting, or carefully crafted ceramics. Her love for crafting was more than a hobby - it was an expression of her creativity, patience, and the warmth she shared with those she loved. She poured her heart into every stitch, bead and ceramic, leaving behind not only cherished keepsakes but also a legacy of artistry and love.
Christmas was the season that brought her the most joy, and she made sure to share that joy with everyone around her. Her cherished tradition was creating a breathtaking Christmas village, a dazzling display that took weeks to assemble. Each house, tree, and tiny figure was placed with care, transforming her home into a winter wonderland. Family, friends, and church members would gather to admire the intricate details, the twinkling lights, and the love she poured into every piece. Her village was not just a display - it was a symbol of the warmth, magic, and generosity she embodied all year round.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 27 years, Jack Burnett; children, Robert (Debra) Petritsch, Kimberly (William) Beaumont, Theresa (Dana) Burnett Szymczuk, John (Christy) Burnett, and Peter (Deanna) Burnett; grandchildren, Marisa, Brianna, Olivia, Stephanie, Erin, Amanda, Danielle, Evan, Kevin, Joseph, Eric, Christine, Dylan, Sarah and Alyssa; eleven great-grandchildren; siblings, Mary Curran, Fran Gilmore, and Michael Grasso; along with many other loving relatives, friends, and her church family. Maddie will be deeply missed by all who knew her, and her memory will be cherished forever.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, 11:00 AM at Shepherd of the Coast Lutheran Church in Palm Coast.
