Ernest George Robinson Sr., affectionately known as “Toney,” began his life’s journey on May 21, 1948, in Oxford, St. Mary, Jamaica. He was the second oldest son of Leslie and Gladys Robinson. Toney’s formative years were spent in Oxford, where he attended Preston Hill Primary School. From an early age, his mother recognized his talent and passion for barbering. With a simple pair of scissors she gifted him, he began honing his craft, practicing on his younger brothers and neighborhood friends.
Toney’s career as a barber flourished in Kingston, Jamaica, where he worked at several establishments, including the renowned Jones Barber Shop. At the age of 21, Toney migrated to the United States, initially settling in Brooklyn, New York. There, he expanded his skills, working as a photographer and tailor, while continuing his barbering journey. Eventually, he established his own business, Toney’s Hair Care, a beloved barbershop in Brooklyn.
In 1991, Toney relocated to Palm Coast, Florida, where he continued his entrepreneurial path, opening Toney’s Barber Shop, which he successfully operated until his retirement in 2022. Toney was not only a skilled barber but also a pillar of his community. His kindness, compassion, unwavering dedication and sense of humor touched countless lives. For Toney, barbering wasn’t just a profession—it was his way of building connections and enriching the lives of others.
In 1992, Toney became a devoted member of the First AME Church of Palm Coast. His faith and commitment to his community were steadfast. Outside of his professional and spiritual life, Toney had a passion for gardening, spending countless hours nurturing his plants on his days off. He and his beloved wife, Joan, shared a love of travel, enjoying trips to Jamaica, cruises through the Caribbean, and weekend getaways exploring Florida. Toney’s hobbies also included kite-making, listening to music, watching old movies, and attending live performances by the legendary Oliver Samuels.
On November 25, 2024, Toney was called into the eternal embrace of his Heavenly Father. He leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and resilience. Toney’s greatest joy was his family, whom he loved unconditionally. He is survived by his devoted wife, Joan, and his children: Dale, Lawrence (Latoya), Ernest Jr, step-son Rayon. His cherished grandchildren—Lucille, Amelia, and Ernest III—will forever remember the love and guidance of their grandfather. Toney is also survived by his siblings: Tatlyn, Patricia, Joanie, Lurline, Lasco, Melbourne, Milton, Eutan, and Lincoln (Donna), sister-in-law Yvonne(Carlton), brother-in-law Oral (Christine). Toney leaves behind a large extended family of Nieces and Nephews who will miss him dearly. He also will be missed by a large circle of friends.
Toney’s quiet and gentle nature defined him, even in his final days. He never asked for much, seldom complained, and faced discomfort with remarkable grace. One of his favorite sayings to friends was, “Meh a-coast, meh nah boast,” a reminder of his humility and contentment with life.
As we honor Toney’s memory, let us celebrate his life by embodying his values:compassion, dedication, and the importance of cherishing our loved ones. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Rest in peace, Toney. You will forever remain in our hearts. Donations in his memory may be made to The First AME Church of Palm Coast.
A church visitation & reflections for Ernest will be held Friday, December 13, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at First AME Church of Palm Coast, 91 Old Kings Road North, Palm Coast, Florida 32137. A funeral service to follow at 11:00 AM.
