Born on June 19, 1916 at Gatewood, she was the daughter of the late Homer Martin and Nona McClung Rodes.
Mrs. Shafer was a graduate of Fayetteville High School and Laird Memorial Hospital School of Nursing (RN) with over 40 years working in the emergency room, clinic, and recovery room. She was in the United States Cadet Corps from 1943-1945, a member of the American Red Cross Nursing Service since 1952, Laird Memorial Hospital Nurses Alumni since 1945, member of Gauley Bridge Baptist Church, and former member of Gatewood Baptist Church.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe G. Shafer; sisters, Hazel Hall and Florence Rodes.
Survivors include her daughter, Robin Shafer Musick (Mark) of Charleston; granddaughter, Amy Musick Hughes (Mark) of Charleston; great-grandson, Garrett Hughes of Charleston; step-daughter, Leah Phillips (Al Watzek) of The Villages, FL; grandson, Scott Phillips (Jennifer) of Manakin Sabot, VA and sons, Jonathan, Austin, and Spencer; granddaughter, Stephanie Franckewitz (Paul Arel) of Cincinnati, Ohio and her sons, Eben and Asa; nieces, Janice Thornton of Melbourne, FL and Delores Schabowski (Jim) of Hebron, IN; and special friends and staff at Edgewood Summit.
Funeral services will be 11 am, Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Pastor Monty Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.
The family will receive friends from 10 am – 11 am on Saturday at the funeral home.
