He was born on February 7, 1946 in Maple Fork, WV. He was the son of the late Delbert Canterbury and Susie Phillps Canterbury.
Charles was a graduate of Collins High School of 1964 in Oak Hill. After graduating high school he joined the military. He served in the Vietnam War and was in the special forces. He was very proud of his service to our country. He held several professions following discharge from the military, including driving a bus for rafting companies and retiring from the Fayette County Board of Education as a bus driver. He was an active member of the First Brethren Church in Oak Hill. Some of his favorite things to do included watching the Fayetteville Pirates and WV mountaineers play football, working the concession stand for any sporting event, and attending church functions.
He loved his girls and grandchildren very much. Left to carry on his memory are his 5 daughters; Anh Hull (husband Justin Hull) of Texas, LeeAnn Belcher (husband James Belcher) of Roanoke, VA, Sandy Hornsby of Beckley, WV, Heather Cooper (husband Michael Cooper) of Fayetteville, WV, and Mary Plass (husband Dustin Plass) of VA Beach, VA; grandchildren Brandon Hull, Morgan Hull, Megan Canterbury, Charles David Canterbury, Tyler Hornsby, Alexis Bess, Ashton Bess, Tucker Cooper, Cade Evans, Allie Evans, and Kyliegh Plass; great grandchildren; Taveyon, Travis, Tanai, Treazure, and Charles Damien; and two brothers; Lawrence Canterbury and James Canterbury.
A memorial service/celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggests making a contribution to the New River Humane Society (we feel he would be happy with this decision, he loved his dogs).
Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home will be assisting the family.
