Early in life he decided that farming was not his calling and discovered the automobile business as his vocation and his passion. Educated at Eastern High School in Jeffersontown Ky he began his 62 year career in the automotive industry as a Rambler mechanic trained at George R Willy’s in Blue Island, Illinois and Bailey Technical School, St Louis MO.
David was also a mechanic at Cooke Pontiac in Louisville KY. He moved on to General Motors’ Pontiac Motor Division for 13 years, as a dealer consultant, district sales manager, and district service manager. He was service and parts director for Cross Pontiac in Louisville KY. While with the DeLorean Motor Company he helped set up the dealer network, refined manufacturing processes, managed the Midwest district and ultimately oversaw the company liquidation. He was a field operations manager for Zimmer Motor Cars. David closed his professional career as Senior Director of 20 Groups at the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA). After retiring with more than 26 years of service to NADA he went on to work at Home Depot and M5 consulting.
Even in retirement David continued to work tirelessly at home maintaining the yard and pool, woodworking, car repair, and handyman work. An improvement specialist, he worked to make the world a more structurally sound and mechanically smooth place. Improving operations and people was his specialty. If you needed anything improved Dave was available to assist, mentor, guide, lead, teach or listen. Since his passing we have been overwhelmed with a depth of appreciation and assurance that David truly made the world and people in his sphere better.
David served as a Crestwood Baptist Deacon in the early 1980’s. He was a drag racer in the late 1950’s and he loved ice cream! His deepest love was his family. David was grandfather to Brian and Rebecca Allen; Brandon and Sophia Scott; and Chloe and Mila Scott, brother to MaryAnne Burke of Texas; father to Melissa (Louisville KY) and Scott Allen (Wellington CO). Carol Scott of McClean, Va was his devoted fiancé of 27 years.
David’s final resting place will be in Louisville KY at Resthaven Memorial Garden. A celebration of life is planned in McClean Virginia in the summer of 2021 pending pandemic status. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Jefferson Community and Technical College in honor of David P Allen. We hope to create an endowment in his name.
