Reverend Richard W. Reid

Born in Fall River, MA, November 26, 1939, a son of the late William B. and Frances L. (Nickerson) Reid, he spent his youth in Fall River, MA and Colonie, NY.

A graduate of Colonie Central high school he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Rochester, Class of 1961 and a Master’s degree in Divinity from the Philadelphia Divinity School, Class of 1964. He was ordained to the Diaconate (Deacon) May 23, 1964 and to the Priesthood November 28, 1964. Rev. Reid served as Episcopal Priest serving many parishes and communities. His ministry brought him to parishes in New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Jersey and Virginia.

Richard and Sondra lived in many communities but returned to the area to spend their retirement years so they could spend time enjoying their children and grandchildren. He loved and supported music and the arts, encouraging youth programs, attending the symphony and various performances. He and Sondra loved the outdoors, gardening, bird watching and fishing. Richard was an avid golfer who enjoyed playing with friends and family. He loved playing bridge and teaching others to play bridge.

He is survived by one daughter, Laura Gutenmann and her husband Wayne; three sons, Bartholomew Reid and his wife Jodi Lewis, Andrew Reid and his wife Joyce and Matthew Reid; two step-daughters, Cheryl Cox and her husband Stephen Rosasco and Robin Steen and her husband Kenneth; four grandchildren, Joshua Gutenmann and his wife Jennifer, Sarah Gutenmann, Abigail Reid and Nathaniel Reid and two step-grandchildren, Ashley and Ian Steen. He was the brother of the late Donald Reid.

His Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 11:00 AM in the Church of Our Saviour, 2112 County Street, Somerset. Visiting hours are Thursday and Friday from 4:00 – 7:00 PM in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place, 178 Winter Street, Fall River. Burial will be private.

Romel Joseph was a blind musician and violinist who lived with Richard and Sondra in Boston while he attended the Juilliard School of Music. Romel returned to Haiti and established the New Victorian School supporting Music Education in Haiti. Friends of Music Education for Haiti Inc.
