Linda J. (Warren) Wheelock, age 73, of Assonet, passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. Born in Fall River, a daughter of the late Henry Warren and Ruth (Crawford) Warren, she lived in Fall River for many years before moving to Assonet in 1983.
A graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School, Class of 1969, she took courses at Wheelock College, computer training at the Academy of Learning and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and her Massachusetts Teaching Certificate from UMass Dartmouth in 1977. She received her Master of Arts in Education and Curriculum Development from Lesley University in 1989. She loved to further her studies and jumped at any opportunity given to participate in trainings in early childhood education. Quite active, she was a member of the National Association for the Education for Young Children, the Child Protection Council, the Department of Education and Childcare Advisory Council and P.A.C.E., Childcare Works.
Linda started her career at Citizens for Citizens as Head Teacher in 1980. She was the Program Project Director of Family Childcare Systems from 1986 until her retirement in 2017. She was also an adjunct faculty teacher at Fisher College and Bristol Community College. After retirement, Linda worked as a receptionist for Waring-Sullivan and Rock Funeral Homes and also enjoyed teaching at Bristol County Agricultural High School, Apponequet Regional High School, and Freetown Lakeville Middle School.
Linda was a proud Deacon for the United Church of Assonet for years. She enjoyed dining out, weekend getaways to New Hampshire, bus trips and visiting family down south, especially her son in Florida and nephew in Georgia.
She is survived by, one son, Scott Wheelock of Hudson, FL, lifetime partner and companion Stephen Wood of Assonet and nephew Karl Bernard of Roswell, GA. She was the sister of the late Paula Bernard, Donald Warren and aunt of the late Lynne Holland.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 11:00 AM in the United Church of Assonet, 9 North Main Street, Assonet, MA 02702. Contributions in her honor may be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168.
