Lamont “Papa” Adams’s passion for life did not end with his passing on Sunday, February 21, 2021. Lamont was born on April 17, 1961, to Rebecca Ivy and Leonard Nicholson. Lamont spent his childhood as the second oldest of five children (Larry, Vicki, Lawanda, and Antoine Adams).
Lamont united in holy matrimony to Yvonne on March 17, 1985; this union created a beautiful family blessed with five children.
Lamont’s pride was in his extensive work career. As a teenager, Lamont worked at Steak ‘n Shake, where he loved to remind everyone he worked “24 hour long” shifts. He was proud of his work history here, and he left there known as the “Best Frisco Melt Maker in town” his words. After mastering Steak ‘n Shake, he moved on and became a custodian for Kirkwood School District, and there he began his legacy as “Mr. Adams.” Mr. Adams quickly became Keysor’s hero because of his desire to see his coworkers and students happy. Whether that was by arriving early to make sure the parking lot was clear of snow or staying late to Barbeque for various events. He loved his job and left an everlasting impact on the entire Kirkwood community after retiring with 20+ years of service.
While Lamont was “Mr. Adams” at work, he was known as “Papa” at home. The simplest pleasures in life brought joy to Papa. He enjoyed fishing, working on cars, listening to Old School R&B music, gardening, and hanging Christmas lights every year. Papa was a true jack-of-all-trades; no task was too big for him to complete. He built a pond and several lawnmowers, and barbeque grills. He finally ran out of space in the backyard, so he built a shed to store more of his inventions. If Papa wasn’t building or fixing something, he spent his time creating infinite memories and making everyone laugh. He took pride in sharing the story of him running “six miles a day” in his younger days and how he could outrun any of his sons.
As Papa got older, he became a huge fan of Walmart and Sam’s Club. He loved shopping at Sam’s with his daughter and riding the automatic wheelchairs. Papa would ride down every aisle, look at one side, and then ride down the same aisle to look at the other side. This was a normal way of shopping for him but very entertaining for us to watch. Needless to say, every store run was guaranteed to last several hours. Papa spent his last days talking on the phone and Facetiming his family. He hadn’t quite figured out that Facetime requires to show your face, so if you Facetimed him, you spent the majority of the time looking at the ceiling. But that didn’t matter because talking to him was always enjoyable. He was a great listener and loved to hear how everyone was doing. If Papa called your phone and you wouldn’t answer, best believe he was going to leave you a voicemail.
Lamont leaves to cherish his memory: his loving children Lamont Jr., Mario Adams, Antonio, Kendall, and Kimberly Turner. Nine pleasant grandchildren, two adorable great-grandchildren, Douglas (dog pal), and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Lamont’s passion for life will continue as he reunites with his beautiful wife, Yvonne Adams, who precedes him in death. Lamont’s passing is not an ending but a new beginning to everlasting love in the Promised Land.
