To the Barton family-
Having learned just now of an iconic man in the funeral industry in Massachusetts, JAMES E BARTON, I'm extending my condolences to his family. I met Jim many years ago on several occasions at a funeral home he managed in New Bedford, MA, and ironically where I came from in Connecticut, he had relations long ago and named all the funeral homes and owners being 80 miles away from his own area. Jim was a class guy and if it's any consolation to you and family, he left behind a legacy in sincerity, compassion and unselfish service to others. I can only hope during your time of sorrow, many will offer comfort and kindness as Jim did for so many years and to many. Respectfully submitted,

I will always remember Jim Barton and pray for him daily!

I will never forget you stopping me on the street as I walked, or while I worked in the bank. You would tell me to run for mayor or in council because New Bedford needs people such as I. You will always be a light and a smile for me. 

My deepest sympathies to the family of my longtime friend, James Barton . I was so sad to say goodbye to him on 5/22/2023 . The last time I said hello to him was in August of 2022 at our NBHS  Class of 61 Reunion. He will be deeply missed. RIP Jim 🙏🏼🥲💔🙏🏼

Jim was a former member and long time Board member of the Boys Club/ Boys & Girls Club of New Bedford. Over those years he was one of our most strongest advocates for the Club. He was always proud to let everyone know that as a member he was selected as Boy Of The Year which was the Club's highest honor. 
I will never forget his unending support he gave to the Club as well as to me when I became Executive Director. He always offered a ear to listen and gave me advice and guidance whenever I needed it, but more importantly became a great friend

I first met Mr Barton in 1990 when my mother passed away. His professionalism, kindness and courtesy made him the person he was both professionally and as a human being. Always had a hand to shake, a kind word of comfort and a measure of respect that is seldom seen in today's society. Whether you encountered him at a funeral service or when you walked Buttonwood Park he was a friend and a light to your day. His presence and person will be missed dearly.  God will probably put him right there at those pearly gates welcoming everyone with that impeccable suit and tie !! Rest in Peace Jim, our loss is Heaven's gain.

How do you make someone's 90th birthday special?? Well, if you were fortunate to be blessed with an amazing friend, he brings you back home for a few hours and of course you have ice cream. Mind you, there was never a bad reason to have ice cream!  😃 For everything you are and everything you shared with so many, Thank You from the bottom of our hearts! I am so very sorry for your loss. I only knew Mr. Barton for a few weeks while taking care of him, but it felt like I knew him for much longer than that. He was a very special person and reminded me a lot of my grandfather. He was always such a pleasure to chat with and take care of. Again, I am very sorry for your loss. 



Paul and are I sorry to read of your father's (grandfather's) passing.  When our son passed on 27 years ago, your father was very comforting at a most difficult time and continued to check on us over the years.  Whether he passed by our then Cottage St home on his walks, run ins at the antique store in Padanaram, or at Panera, he always took the time to chat with us.  He was a very caring, compansionate soul and someone who will not be forgotten by those whose lives he touched.  He was there for all and your memories (pictures) clearly indicate the person he was.  May the support of family and friends bring you all the comfort needed at this difficult time.   Blessings to you all!

It is with sadness Norbert and I read about the passing of your Dad and Granddad. As neighbors and friends we shared many a chat before COVID changed all our lives.  Jim was a great communicator and kept abreast of all things neighborhood related. We have missed seeing him as a fixture walking up  Hawthorn St.  and in and about our neighborhood that we have shared for 45 years. Running into Jim was always a pleasure as we exchanged memories of a long time history that went back to the 70's .  My most cherished memory will always be the last visit we had here at Stonehaven,  just before COVID.  He loved seeing our home still festooned in its Christmas garb. Our visit lasted from morning to late in the afternoon as Jim and I spoke about everything under the sun.  He came to pick up a donation to save the "Bells of St. Lawrence",  had lunch and ended up 
solving the problems of the world in my kitchen .  (We had a 'bit of a gossip, also'!)   Laughed about your Mom coming dressed as a fabulous Carmen Miranda to the HOORAY for HOLLYWOOD party July 23, 1977 at 16 Arnold Place - a Louis O. St. Aubin, Leblanc, Rosene, Oxley, Scott,  and Cohan production at Marcia Rosene and Warren Oxley's  home and gardens.  Farewell dear Friend, your presence will be missed.  Our deepest condolences to the Barton Family for yet another loss in so short a period of time. Our hearts are so sad for you for the loss of both your parents - the Grand Matriarch and Patriarch of your families! Jim was my mother’s neighborhood friend when they were young and continued to be a kind and supportive person over many years. I met Mr. Barton at the Bank I work for,  I always looked forward to his visits, what a sweet & wonderful man he was. Kind & generous are the words that come to mind when I think about him, he always had a warm  & welcoming smile on his face.  Mr. Barton touched my heart when my Father in law passed, he was so kind to my family and myself, during that sad time, he gave me a condolence hug that wasn’t one of a funeral director but rather a friend,. I  feel very blessed & honored to have known him. My dear Mr. Barton, my friend may you rest in everlasting peace. My sincere condolences to the Barton family.

Jim and I  were the closest cousins, both in age and as BFF''s,  (only 8 days apart)  I have such fond memories of our childhood ..playing "school" or "store" with all his mother's can goods lining the railing to the basement.  He loved  ourt  school,  St Kilian's and he kept in touch with friends he met there. During our high school days, he would often point to one of the stately homes on County St and say" That's going  to be my funeral home someday. "Your mom and dad would visit us in W. Bridgewater while they were dating and he'd say he wanted one brownie, no ends and a coke with one icecube.   (sound familiar). I always enjoyed his company and his humor.  He was a very thoughtful, kind and generous man.   I will always treasure all the times we spent together.

Just a note on the 2 photos:  The first one is of our family on New Year's Eve. Our grandparents, the Desjardins loved celebrating New Year's Eve. Pepere would rent a hall for the evening.
The second photo was taken on Christmas Eve.  The Bartons would always come to our house to celebrate.

Thank you Jim for always being there for me! You were a true Christian in every way and I will never forget all of the kindnesses you bestowed on my family throughout the years. May God bless you  and may He lead you to eternal rest!

To Jim's daughters and to all of his extended family I offer my most sincere sympathy. Being on the Outer Cape, word takes time to arrive here, and I just now learned of Jim's death. He was a wonderful man and a great support to me personally when I was stationed in New Bedford. We had many a good laugh together, especially when I told him that he was like Baptism .. he left an indelible mark on all those he met. He certainly left a mark on me, and for that I'm truly grateful! I'll be offering Mass for both Jim and Sharon soon! You're all in my prayers!

Jim, a smile that could light up the room. You were admired by many, including myself. Your legacy as a well respected individual and Funeral Director will live on. You are a true example of kindness and good. We were so blessed that our British families go back in time to our parents and to a time beyond that. Our deepest condolences to Jim & Sharon’s family. He was a dear friend of mine and thoroughly enjoyed his friendship.  We had many fond memories of the funeral business and he was also well respected in his profession.  We are keeping both Jim & Sharon in our thoughts and prayers.

To Jim’s family,

I was so saddened to hear about Jim’s passing but so happy for him. He is now in heaven with his beloved wife and is waiting for us to see him again one day. He was such a wonderful man. Couldn’t find anyone more kind and generous. I remember he had a special Mass said for my parents on their anniversary several years ago at St Lawrence parish at the 7:00 am Mass. 
He will be sorely missed.
