Captain Robert (Bob) L. Crouch, USN (Ret.), passed away on November 3, 2024, in Fairfax, Virginia, at the age of 89. Bob was a truly great man who surrounded himself with the people and family he loved, especially his beloved wife, Nancy. They were married for 65 years.
Bob was born in Florence, South Carolina, where he attended grade school and graduated from high school in 1952. He spent one year at Clemson College before receiving an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He graduated with the Class of 1957 and was commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy Supply Corps.
Bob served on active duty in the Navy for more than 28 years, specializing in resale, logistics systems design, computer systems management, and financial management. His senior assignments included Vice Commander of the Navy Accounting and Finance Center and Commanding Officer of the Navy Finance Center. He also served as an instructor at the Naval Academy and as faculty at the National Defense University.
After retiring from the Navy, Bob joined the Navy Mutual Aid Association where he served as Vice President for twelve years. In addition to earning a Master of Science degree in Computer Management from the Navy Postgraduate School, Bob obtained professional certifications as a Chartered Financial Consultant and Chartered Life Underwriter.
An avid golfer, Bob was a long-time member of the Army Navy Country Club where he served on the Board of Governors, as Treasurer, and as President. A talented athlete, Bob shot his age in golf every year from 69 onward, including this year – a feat he always said got easier each year. Few golfers in the world can match this accomplishment!
Bob is survived by his wife, Nancy; his daughter, Donna C. Tanner (Mike) of Ashburn, Virginia; his son, Robert A. Crouch (Judy) of Cary, North Carolina; four grandchildren: Lindsay, Amanda, Nicole, and Jared; and seven great-grandchildren: Riley, Brooke, Jack, Charleigh, Luke, Shea, and Ayla.
Bob was a long-time member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church in Annandale, VA. There will be a Celebration of Life service at St Matthews on December 16, 2024 at 11:00AM followed by a reception for all guests at Army Navy Country Club Fairfax. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date for family and close friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Bob may be made to Saint Mathews United Methodist Church Annandale, VA (https://www.stmatthewsumc.org/) or to Folds of Honor Foundation (https://foldsofhonor.org/).
The Captain has answered the last call… Fair winds and following seas.
