Margaret Lily Darr, 88, of Bay County, FL passed away Sunday, February 23, 2014, at St. Andrews Skilled Nursing Home in Panama City, FL. She was born March 6, 1925, in Sudbury, Suffolk, England to the late Robert C. and Ada Maude (Martin) Harrison.
She joined the British Army at the age of 18 and was stationed in London during WWII. She met and married her husband of 35 years, Dorris E. (Woody) Darr. In 1945, at the age of 20, she came to the United States, arriving in New York City on the vessel Queen Mary to begin her new life in Evansville, Indiana. In 1946, she became a citizen of the United States. She was a member of The War Bride Club in Evansville for many years and joined the Epworth United Methodist Church with her husband in 1950. She worked in Dietary at Harrison High School and later at Welborn Hospital in the Dietary Department. Upon her retirement, she was a volunteer at several Evansville Nursing Homes and joined the Women’s Circle Club at Salem United Methodist Church. In 1999, she moved to Lynn Haven, FL, where she attended First Presbyterian Church. She took great pride in her volunteer efforts and continued her volunteer work at Gulf Coast Hospital in Florida. She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, knitting, crocheting and being outdoors. She was an independent sole until the end of her time here on earth.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Dorris Elwood “Woody” Darr; brothers, Sonny and Robert Harrison; and sister, Evelyn Stammers.
Margaret is survived by her daughter, Beverly A. (Donald A.) Cameron of Panama City Beach, FL; sons, Robert B. Darr of Evansville, IN and George E. Darr (Deene H Mefford) of Newburgh, IN; grandsons, Robert B. (Shanna) Darr II of Evansville, IN and Jason A. Cameron (Elizabeth Sinnett) of Panama City Beach, FL; granddaughters, Karrie A. (Wayne) Berry of Deland, FL, Sierra M. Darr of Evansville, IN and Megan D. Darr of Indianapolis, IN; great-grandchildren, Ravyn E., Montana L.E., and Pierce Darr all of Evansville, IN, Madison A. McCormick and Cameron L. Berry both of Deland, FL; sister, Mary Barbara Jarmin of Sudbury, Suffolk, England; eighteen nieces and nephews; and many great and great, great nieces and nephews.
Services will be 1:30 PM Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Alexander East Chapel, Evansville, IN, with burial in Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may visit Saturday from 10:00 AM until service time at the funeral home.
