Josephine “Jo” Florene Burton, 86, of Naples, FL, passed away from her earthly home to be with her heavenly Father on Wednesday, March 22, 2011. She was the oldest of 11 children and was born November 19, 1924, in Elkhart, IL to Carlos and Julia Myers.
She met her husband of 52 years, Eugene “Gene” Burton, while working on the LST’s at the Shipyard in Evansville. She retired from Faultless Caster Corporation after 37 years of employment in the Personnel Department. She was later employed at The Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center, after being a volunteer and where Gene had received many services. Jo was the hostess of the Hospitality Room for the annual Easter Seals Telethon. She was also a volunteer for The Centre, where she enjoyed many events.
Jo was a member of the Eastern Starr #555 and the Daughters of The Nile Isis Temple Patrol #41 and enjoyed traveling throughout the Unites States to perform with them. She was most proud of her speaking part in the movie “A League of Their Own” where she was the Chaperone for The Racine Belles baseball team.
She was a resident of Evansville for 64 years until she moved to Naples, FL in 2007 to reside with her daughter and son-in-law due to complications from Alzheimer’s. She was a member of American Baptist East Church in Evansville and attended North Naples United Methodist Church in Naples, FL.
Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Burton, in 1999; sisters, Carol Myers and Carlann Winters; and brother, David Myers.
She is survived by her daughters, Betty Burton, and husband, John Sundman, of Vineyard Haven, MA and Mary Jo Wortman and husband, Chris of Naples, FL; grandchildren, Dr. Brooke Baker and husband, Dr. Matthew Baker, of Bradenton, FL, Jainaba Tuffile and husband, Alex, of Amherst, MA, Grace Burton Sundman of Chatham, NJ and Jakob Burton Sundman of Oak Bluffs, MA; adored grand puppies, Britney Baker, Bailey Wortman and Janou Sundman; brothers, James (Rosel) Myers of Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada, Daniel (Delores) Myers of Temecula, CA and Dixon (Judy) Myers of Azle, TX; sisters, Francis (Welber) Griffith of Greensboro, NC, Christina Roach of Altus, OK, Bernice Forby of Lynwood WA and Linda Kay Larsen of Indianapolis; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10:00 AM Monday, March 28, 2011, at Alexander East Chapel, officiated by Pastor Jeff Stratton with entombment in Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit Sunday from 1:00 to 7:00 PM, with a memorial service at 6:30 PM by The Daughters of The Nile, and Monday from 9:00 AM until service time at the funeral home. A memorial service will also be held at 4:00 PM Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at North Naples United Methodist Church Chapel in Naples, FL.
