Smitty graduated from F.J Reitz High School in 1958 and studied at Purdue University.
Along with his parents and brothers, Smitty owned Hutch & Son Industrial Electronics. They started the family business in 1953 with several locations in Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio.
Smittty became a member of the West Side Nut Club in 1966 and served as the group’s Fall Festival Chairman in 1970 and President in 1976. He remained active in the club for many years helping with their numerous projects around the west side earning him the prestigious Nut of the Month award several times. Smitty was involved with USI Varsity Club for many years and got to enjoy their Division II National Championship.
Smitty enjoyed the outdoors, being on his John Deere tractors (or his other toys) and boating.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy (Ashby) and Raymond Taylor.
Smitty is survived by his children, Stacey (Tom) DeVault, Tony (Bobbi) Taylor and Lorrie Wigand; four grandchildren, Matthew (Jessica) DeVault, Sydney DeVault, Zachary Wigand and Max Wigand; and brothers, JP Taylor of Milton GA, and Willie Taylor of Evansville.
The family would like to thank Walnut Creek and Heart to Heart Hospice for the care and compassion they showed Smitty in his final days.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Last Family Night with Smitty on Thursday, March 9, 2023 from 4-7 p.m. at Alexander West Chapel.
After the visitation, friends are welcome to enjoy a beverage at a nearby tavern. As Smitty always said, “I got time for one more!”
